Downtown Asheville is pretty open to LGBTQ(etc). But these days, people are buzzing around with their faces in their iPhones and you could be dressed up as a pink elephant and they wouldn't notice.

If you get out of Asheville, you will find more conservative areas.

My partner is going to pursue a position in either Animal Rescue / Adoptions / Fostering, or something with the parks... ranger, tour guide, etc. She is currently the foster manager for a large animal shelter here in Florida, and would like something similar.

There are several excellent animal rescue shelters in this area. Brother Wolf I believe may now have two or three locations. Ashville Humane Society is also excellent and has several locations. I adopted my beautiful sweet kitty about 6 months ago from Charlie's Angels in Fletcher (one town over from Avl.) fantastic people, they interview every applicant and are one of the few that do home checks which is sorely needed. Even if you just get in one of those as an unpaid volunteer, you will be blessed.

We lived in Waynesvile, it's quite conservative. Actually anything west of Asheville is as well. Have you looked at Black Mountain or Fairview areas?
