Wink Asheville area

Question for anybody about this area of the state?

What are the school systems like and what is the cost of living like? Can a person making a salary in the 30k range afford a small starter home?

I looking for a teaching job in the area, I'm from Michigan...and the economy up here is pretty bad. I realize that the teacher wages aren't what they are up here etc. but I'm curious about this state vs. possibly AZ.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.
