Anyone ever been to either of these near Robbinsville, NC up in the Smokies about 4hrs from Charlotte?

Thinking about going end of July. It is suppose to be great for motorcycles, sports cars & convertibles.

Tail of the Dragon is 11 miles long and has 318 curves on Highway 129.

Cherohala Skyway is about 60 miles long on Highway 143 and alot of the Skyway is over 4,000 -5,000 feet in elevation.

Default Tail of the Dragon or Cherohala Skyway?

Anyone ever been to either of these.

Heard it is suppose to be good for motorcycles, sports cars & convertibles.

Would love to hear from anyone that has been on either of these.

THANKS!

Tail of the Dragon - yes. Just google it . . . there are even a lot of pictures on that whole stretch of road. Never tried it w/ a motorcycle - but have w/ a sports car. You feel you have had a workout when dealing w/ a steering wheel - I am sooooo serious.

There is another poster you may want to get in touch with (who is very helpful with this area)....silverwing (http://www.city-data.com/forum/membe...wing-3288.html)

Can't wait. We want to take our convertible up there end of July. Have heard both highways are fun. Have seen the website and it looks like fun.

Have heard the TN State Troopers (TN side) are the worst...much worse than the NC State Troopers.

Cherohala Skyway was closed 6 days ago due to ice & snow. Alot of it is over 5,000 feet in elevation and pics show ice & snow last week on the website!

Default tail of the dragon

I used to take my bicycle and ride it about once a week when I lived in the area. It is very scenic and would be a great place to ride, especially if you can find a weekend that isn't to busy. I believe the website for it is Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap and Cherohala Skyway, Graham Co, NC Another area that is very simular but less known is Shady Valley, TN. It is basically Hwy 421 between Bristol and Mountain City, TN. Shady Valley is between the two mountain tops and where the riders meetup to eat, hang out, etc.

We've been on them a few times with our Corvettes. Both are a lot of fun.

Dragon for the challenge and Cherohala for the scenery, IMO. It's been a few years since I've been in that area, I've been doing a lot of exploring in SW Virginia and NE Tennessee lately, but since we bought a Spyder this year 2008 Can-Am Spyder Test
I guess I'm just going to have to take it down there to try out

You'll be busy minding your driving on the Dragon to see much. Watch for the LEOs (law enforcement officers) and if a rider comes up on your tail, try to hug the edge of the road and let them go 'round. The Cherohala is easier to drive, there are pullouts to stop and enjoy the scenery -- which I highly recommend. In that part of the state, you can still look out at the expanses and see nothing but mountains. I've always done the rides during the week, in the morning. It's less crowded.

Here's a cute video to watch. Killyboy is responsible for this, but I don't think he has it on his site anymore
