canton
Dear greenhornetnc,
My husband and I recently drove through Canton (couple weeks ago)
because we are thinking of relocating to the mountains - we had a very unpleasant surprise when we drove into town.
Here is a link to the paper mill that literally sits in the downtown of Canton.

We were disappointed because there were a few nice houses but
we are not interessted in looking at this everyday. That said, I did a little
research a head of time and the housing is affordable and crime is low.
good luck with your search.

You usually smell Canton before you reach it. This explains why
http://www.bredl.org/pdf/051105_BR_LZ-RW.pdf
The Canton paper mill has an interesting history: the employees of the mill basically bought a big chunk of it to keep from losing their jobs.
http://www.kpsfund.com/press/pr1999-05-14pace.htm It's a strong-minded community, but I wouldn't consider it a good place to transplant yourself

we are also looking at wnc and we have toured for 2 weeks at a time. i 2 have 2 kids and i am really looking at schools, crime and atmosphere. we found canton, candler and leister nice and affordable, but canton does have that paper mill and i was told a few years back it flooded bad and drove out some of the business in the area and condemed a few houses. we have now focused on fairview and arden area due to the schools and its proximity to downtown.

Yeah, come to the NC mountains. We love to feud with Yankees and the bears are getting hungry. Come for a visit, but don't be like the brother-in-law who won't leave.

Canton, NC
If you are smart enough to know where to live in Canton, the paper mill isn't an issue (nor the flooding). Canton addresses go right on up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It ranges from a nice little town to beautiful wilderness. There are a lot of disappointed Floridians in their million dollar homes hanging off of the sides of mountains in nearby Waynesville, who smell the Champion plant more than some of the residents of Canton.

I drove thru that area once awhile back and LOL I will detour at all costs to go thru that area ever again LOL
That smell is horrible.
I hope everyone there has good health with that nearby. I do not know the long term effects that has but it would make me nervous about the risks.

dont move to canton. i used to live in the next town over, and the smell is bad!!! it smells like an elderly man's walking farts after eating at the chinese buffet in canton. waynesville is prettier, and smells better too. a lot more transient i would think. i just cant picture ppl moving to canton unless they are looking for cheap housing.

Canton deserves a close check
I moved (close to) Canton on the mountain overlooking the town 2 months ago. The paper mill is seldom a factor and smell is infrequent. I just came back from downtown Canton and smell was minimal even on plant property. That is not to say that under cetain conditions in town it can stink on occasions. I am 2.2 miles from the plant and the smell simply is minimal and infrequent here just a bit from town. I have yet to meet a unfriendly person, and have all normal daily shopping and services close by with little traffic and free parking. It is a nice small town.
