Not pumping our town of Waynesville, but the downtown has several galleries, many other shops, several restaurants, etc.
Artsy Main St, brick sidewalks, lots of shade trees, benches to sit on, public parking just down the hill in a big lot and a large public parking deck ~ 5 min walk from Main St.

The last time my sister visited me we drove to Brevard for the day. We loved Brevard with all the nice art galleries and places for lunch. My sister is coming back to visit and I would like to find another town that is similar to Brevard, but not more than an hour’s drive from South Asheville. We mainly like to go to art galleries and then have lunch.
Any ideas?

Burnsville and Penland are well worth the drive and it's really not a bad drive up I-26 to 19E as it's a divided 4 lane highway the entire way almost. Burnsville has a cute little downtown for lunch and some nice shops, as well as the Toe River Arts Alliance shop which has some very nice pieces from local artists on display/for sale. Penland is 20 minutes past Burnsville and unless having some physical limitations think you would find it well worth the additional 40 minutes of drive time. Besides the visitor center and gallery/shop, on the perimeter surrounding campus are private homes/galleries of grads who have stayed on or come back to the area to perfect their craft and usually maintain open hours for retail traffic out of their home-based galleries. One of my favorites is the Barking Spider Pottery. Inquire at Penland and they'll give you a list of nearby artisans that are open to the public.

This is very helpful information. I have been to Burnsville to visit the artist studio of William Bernstein. I might just decide to make the drive to Pentland. Thank you for this wonderful information. It sounds like an amazing place.

Hope you do, I think you'll enjoy Penland. They just announced they were reopening for the Fall Semester today!

The last time I saw Jon and Rebecca of Barking Spider, they told me they were retiring. That was a couple of years ago at the pottery show in Spruce Pine. I know they are no longer doing shows. They may be receiving limited visitors at their studio, but I wouldn't count on it.
I won’t have the energy to visit both Burnsville and Penland in one day, so which place would you choose. I lived in downtown Chicago for 35 years and did not drive, so I don’t feel comfortable driving on highways. I don’t enjoy driving either.
Definitely Burnsville as there are many shops, galleries and some nice little places for lunch in a compact area. Toe River Arts at 102 W Main Street is a must-see as is Something Special (huge gift shop) at 12 W Main Street, Mountain Time on Main at 105 W Main Street and the Magnolia Wren at 127 W Main Street. For lunch check out the Cast Iron Kitchen (109 W Main Steet) which was recently opened by a young couple serving up some great modern Southern-style food. They're open just Thursday through Monday however.

Thank you so much for this information. Hendersonville is closer to my house, but it sounds like you prefer Burnsville to Hendersonville. Any recommendations in Hendersonville?
