Canton is the home of a major pulp mill. Pulp mills digest the pulp using a sulfuric acid bath that generates carbon disuolfide and other gases that reek of that wonderful rotten egg smell. On a bad day you can smell it in Arden. However, I've heard you can get used to a XXXX under your nose if you leave it there long enough so move on in..

We may be moving to Canton in June because there is a house in Canton offered to us for $300 a month if it doesn't sell soon. I was just wondering if there was anything else around there in case this does sell in this price range. We do have 3 dogs so we are looking for a fenced yard. Preferably within 1 hour of Canton and available June 1st.

I'm looking at a property near 276 South & Chiquanpen S/E of Canton.
How far does the smell go or does that depend a lot on the weather ?? I thought they had closed that mill down a while back. I lived in Asheville for two years in early 90's.

Leicester. Some decent land out there but getting there can be a pain. The highway is a racetrack. I had a client that was out there and I hated driving that road. Lots of mobile homes and the like. As with anywhere in WNC you get some people who don't like "outsiders". The worse part of it....getting into town. Patton and L Highway are what nightmares are made of.
Canton. Not a bad little town, inexpensive and it has a hometown feel. The bad part? The smell from the mill. You get used to it. My only concern is the "outfall" from the plant and what's in it. There seem to be higher than normal cases of birth defects. Sorry I can't share the source but it's a touchy subject.

Well is a bit unnerving even if I am past, well practically, childbearing years. As for people not liking outsiders that is ok we pretty much keep to ourselves anyhow so no big deal. We just need affordable, accepts our dogs, has a fence and not real far from Canton if that house does sell. I will keep an eye out for listings with Leicester name then, thanks. It is very helpful having this board.
It is kind of funny, I can't find the post now but I was telling my husband there was a post about WNC being like Little House on the Prairie and I don't think the person meant it nice but I was like see now just what I am looking for and my husband was like umm I don't think that was the point the person was trying to make. I was like well most of those things sounded good to me.
