I lived in Boone for 10 years. It's a tough place to make a living IF you don't work at the university, hospital, or own your own business. The rest of the economy is based around tourism and the hospitality industry... not known for high wages or good benefits... or benefits at all.

Real estate values are high because of the second home market. In general, rental properties in town are expensive because of students who can share rent.

BUT, one real positive is that if you want to get involved, the community is very open to newcomers and volunteers. Unlike a lot of small towns in eastern NC or the Piedmont, the community's social life is not based around the local country club.

Do you have other specific questions?

Listen my daughter is moving to Boone in a few weeks [has a lease] and plans on establishing state residency in NC. [Before you think I am a freeloader, I LIVE in SC but have paid NC State income taxes from 1986 to 2006..........sooo..........]

Anyway - trying to recall the sequence of changing over car registration, insurance, drivers license, voter registration. Any insights?

Do you still have to take the written drivers test for NC [SC just took my old NC DL when we moved there] -- I still remember when I took it, I learned more about different kinds of alchoholic beverages than I ever wanted to know.

Here's a link that should answer all her/your questions: NCDOT Division of Motor Vehicles

License plate (car registration) and driver's license offices are separate, and in two different locations. When she gets her new driver's license, she can register to vote at the same time.
