Hi, I'm hopefully moving from Raleigh to Ashe County in the next few weeks and would very much appreciate some info about activities for kids (Ages 6 & 4) and the local school system. My son is advanced for his age and will need a challenging curriculum (not letting him skip grades) so I'm nervous about what school to send him to. I can't find much info online and would love to hear some pearls of wisdom from those of you who have them!

The Ashe county school system is great. Blue Ridge, Mountain View, West Wood are all newer facilities (esp. westwood, its only a couple years old) with great faculty. Though I don't have kids, (I'm only a few years removed myself) I've heard nothing but good things from those that do. I'm sure that they'll be able to keep your son engaged. The middle school, if you don't live in the northwest corner of the county, is a fairly long drive (or bus ride), but you've got a few years before you have to deal with that. The high school is also only 10 years old. As far as activities for the kids, well, thats what you make it. There isn't a lot thats geared toward younger kids (or older ones for that matter). For what its worth, my days were spent with sports, dirtbikes, swimming and fishing, with lots of trips to Boone and Winston thrown in. Personally, I loved it. At any rate, I hope you decide to move to Ashe and all goes well.

Thank you so much for your reply! I admit that I'm a bit nervous to leave the comfort and abundance of kids activities here in Raleigh for a complete 180 up there but the idea that I'll be able to just open the back door and let them play in the yard without the fear of their getting hit by a speeding car is a huge draw. Bring on the tire swing, treehouse and imagination!
Thanks again babyorr9! |
