Warning! Do not speed on Blue Ridge Parkway
Listen up everybody that plans on driving the Blue Ridge Parkway. A friend of mine that works at the High Country Host in Boone said that the main guy from the Park Service came in to tell them to warn everyone that the Park Service were going to really get real serious about speeding on the Parkway. Remember that most of the speed limit is 45 miles per hour but when you are going north from about the Linville Falls area until after the Cone Manor Estate, near Blowing Rock, the speed limit goes down to 35 miles per hour. My mountain man was at the local watering hole a couple of weeks ago, and some guy came in and said he had just spent a week in jail for going 55 miles an hour on The Parkway. Mountain Man said "I just thought they would give you a ticket" and the guy said they gave him a week in jail. There may be more to the story than what the guy told, but I won't be speeding for sure.

I can't help but say it's kind of funny, to beware of speeding on the Parkway... it's kind of hard TO speed up there in so many places, because of the hairpin curves and cliffs and tunnels. When it says 45 mph, what it means is TRY and go all the way to 45 mph.

I think it is great. I hate getting on the "commuter" section in Asheville and getting tailgated the entire way. I just slow down. The closer they get, the slower I go.

The Park Service can issue tickets?? Are you sure??
LOL...I am fairly certain that you don't get jail time just for speeding one time clearly there is a lot more to that story. Was he involved in a police chase? Did he fail to pay the ticket or show up in court??
Thanks for the warning, but it is no secret you could get a ticket for speeding anywhere and there seem to be some factual errors in your warning post.

That's my thought too. I tried setting my cruise control to 45 to see if that speed was possible considering the road. It can be done, but not without using both lanes on occassion. Not a good idea.

Hi NCyank, as far as that character who said he just got out of jail, I was wrong about spending a week in jail, my mountain man said he told him a month for going 55 in a 45. I bet if the truth were known, he probably was a smart a**s. That we do not know for sure. But as far as tickets are concerned, oh yes. The park rangers can give tickets for speeding, fishing violations, and a friend got one because his dog was not on a leash. Also, I need to mention that the Park Service is also cracking down on poaching in the forest. There are people who back trucks up into areas that are far up in the forest and just start digging. But some regular folks that think that it is okay to take a little plant or even log moss will get in big trouble. You can not take anything on federal land. Check with The High Country Host in Boone and they can give you all the facts about what you can or can not do on the or around federal land.

I practice that also, some of them catch on and back off, then there are the others

Try it and see
Remember that speeding on the BRP is a federal offense, and tickets start somewhere on the other side of $1,000.00 and go up from there. A co-worker didn't go to jail, but they relieved him of over $1,500.00 for driving 55.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info on the Park Service. Being a very law abiding type...I don't usually have run-ins with park service or many other law enforcement agencies. I thought you were referring to some state park agency, mostly fishing licenses and stuff.
