Default Good Mountain Town Advice

We visited Asheville, considering a move there several months ago and thought it beautiful but was surprised at the downtown area and all the "hippies?" don't know how to describe it. However, it didn't bother me too much but i wondered if the rest of the town was the same way. I thought maybe we could live in a neighboring town and that would be o.k.

We also checked out Hickory and found it to be kind of run down.

We currently live in Phoenix, AZ and have for 8 years. Its hot here!!! We live in a subdivision with 6 ft. brick walls around the yard. Lots of crime and traffic. We are early 30's planning on kids.

What we are looking for is :
A mountain town with some stores and grocery shopping

A good church that is worried more about spreading the Word than what people are wearing

A Job, my husband is a diesel mechanic currently working for caterpillar....i will work from home and it doesn't matter too much where we live for my work.

A good place to raise kids
and people are open to "newcomers"

A house without brick walls around that yard that is rural but not terribly lonely.

thats about it...after doing some research i thought we might try to visit Brevard, Hendersonville and Boone (though Boone may be too "out there") are these good places to check out?
thanks in advance for the input.
