No, it doesn't quite work that way if you are from Florida. Sure, you can avoid the state income tax in Georgia or NC. But I believe that both GA and NC have similar tax relief for people who declare their houses homestead. So, if you have a little house in Florida, to legally call "home", but have a big house in North Carolina - I believe your property taxes would be significantly higher than residents of that state. I could be wrong about this - someone with more knowledge could probably set me straight on this.

I live in Franklin...formally from FL and I pay a small amount of state and property tax in comparasion to the billions of people and tourists that FL has to deal with. Trust me....we paid before living there. Besides, your son can file a state income tax return and probably get back a refund just like federal tax.
