Check out Burnsville. It is about 30 miles North/East of Asheville. We moved here from Raleigh and absolutely love it.

For what you are looking for I would suggest Waynesville!! Really tall dramatic mountains & easy access to the blue ridge parkway with tons of hiking. A quaint tiny downtown. Its about 30 minutes southwest of asheville. I also like Burnsville & I've heard housing is more affordable out that way. All the little towns around Sylva NC are beautiful. Sylva is very unique for such a small town & I love it. I think you should also check out Bryson City. Its surrounded by the Smokey Mountains & Blue Ridge mountains. Hendersonville is ok but its hotter & a little flatter.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Brevard yet. I love that little town and if I didn't work in Asheville, I'd move out there in a nano-second. It's at the base of Mt. Pisgah.

Others have posted about Waynesville and I have to say that I really like that area too although Haywood County tends to get a lot more snow than I prefer.

Happy hunting!

Default I have to agree

If I were to move into the western mtns, which may be a consideration, I would move to Brevard, then maybe Waynesville, as another poster said they have cute little mainstreets to hang out on. Plus Hendersonville in that same area. You are close to Asheville!
I have a feeling that housing is pretty expensive in those towns because of the movement of retirees to the area. I would be looking for a little one bedroom fixer upper, and would hope to pay no more than $100,000 for it in a pretty average neighborhood, seeing I am single. I just need some quaintness such as little coffeeshops/cafes/bookstores and the like. If I could afford it, I would be living in Denver, Ft collins and Boulder mainly because of the downtown/mainstreets. I brings excitement to the area.....thats just my opinion anyways

I don't think you will find a town that won't suit your needs. Keep looking and find the area most comfortable to you!

Default Moe to WNC

We live in Black Mountain and really like it. It is a very nice small town, very family friendly. The taxes are pretty high in Buncombe County, though. You may look into Hendersonville. It is also a nice smaller town and taxes in Henderson County are lower. Brevard is also a cute in Transylvania County. You have many options. Good luck!

Lightbulb Penrose

I do not know if you are still searching for a small town, but if so you should look at Penrose in Transylvania County. Particularly the Jeter Mountain area. I live in a small community called Mountain Meadows on Jeter Mountain Road. We are on the very top of the mountain, have very few but WONDERFUL neighbors all throughout the community, and no matter where you live on the mountain you have the most GORGEOUS view of the Blue Ridge Parkway. We are close enough to the city of Brevard to go to Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Ingles or Bi-Lo etc, and have all your needs met, yet far enough away to have peace of mind, privacy, and a small town atmosphere. We are about 10 minutes away from the entrance to the Pisgah National Forest and have direct access to the Blue Ridge Parkway as well as numerous camping and picnic sites within the forest. It is a wonderful area to raise kids, having the option of 2 High School and Middle Schools and 3 Elementary Schools that have all ranked among the highest in the state. I have lived in a small town for the greatest part of my life. I used to be in the Air Force and lived in Texas, Missouri, Illinois and Mississippi for the duration of my enlistment, and now that I am back here I would not trade it for the world!!!! I now have a son of my own, he is now 10 months old, and I couldn't imagine raising him anywhere else. there are so many fun and exciting things withing Transylvania County for the entire family to enjoy to include the Recreation Department, SAFE and wonderfully fun public parks, horse back riding, the Cradle of Forestry, fishing, bike riding, rock climbing, kayaking and whitewater rafting, canoing, skateboard park, and so many other things, all accessible withing minutes no matter where you live in the county. You should REALLY look into Transylvania County, whether it is Rosman, Lake Toxaway, Sapphire, Pisgah Forest, Brevard, Balsam Grove, Penrose or Little River. All are amazing places to live, and you will never see a more beautiful view of the mountains. It is such a peaceful, SAFE, and exciting place to live. We even have very famous actors that have homes here, one being just down the road from us (Steve Martin!!!) Happy Hunting!!!! I really hope you find what you are looking for. I read through the other replies to your forum to see what had been suggested....if you are REALLY looking for the small town life I would lean towards Rosman (where I grew up). It was and still is the typical small town where you walk to the store and you know everyone that lives in the town limits...no one bothers you or gets into your business, there are less than 600 people that live there, and the town is just like a family...always there for eachother and always helping out when people are in need. If you are looking for something away from interstate traffic and crime rates with good family fun, look into Transylvania County!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, above this is a website that gives all the information for Transylvania County to include housing costs, income levels, crime levels, school information, county finance info, relocation info, etc. I think it might be helpful. Also, seeing that your wife is an RN, we have a great hospital, Transylvania County Hospital, in Brevard that is ALWAYS hiring RNs. The pay from what I understand is very good. Something to look in to.

Take care!!!!
