viajero8 is on a distinguished road
I have a condo in Miami and spend a few months in the winter there so I thought I would throw in my two cents. The traffic is not comparable. It is more like bottle necks in the summer on certain streets. I can't be compared to the parking lot traffic on I-95 in SFL.

It is probably too late to add a couple of other areas but UNC-Asheville and Western Carolina are two other state schools to considere. I loved Sylva/Dillsboro where Western is located. The climate in Asheville and Sylva is warmer in the winter because it is lower in elevation than Boone.

As for the racial mix there is a simple historical explanation. There were no plantations in the west and in fact it was for the most part anti-slavery. It tried to form a separate state with eastern Tenn known as Franklin. There were many unionist strongholds during the civil war. Most of the black population is in Asheville. I believe there was some slave ownership there by the wealthy SC plantation owners who had houses there to escape the heat. So you will find the racial diversity that does exist is there because people have moved from somewhere else.

Boone's average high temperature in the summer is lower than Boston but if the cold winters get to you drive 2 hours south to Charlotte and take the kids. It can be 10 to 20 degrees warmer than Boone.

I have lived in the very western tip of the state, as well as Haywood county and now Boone. All of the areas have their ups n downs but I can say Boone is by far the friendliest and most accepting of all of these areas. There can be traffic right in town, but pick any direction and drive five or ten minutes and you're back out in the country!

My only complaint with Boone is trying to find a rental! We had one lined up, it fell thru at the last minute and now we are having a heck of time finding anything that's not way expensive! Lol we need a family home and won't be sharing our xpenses with three other roommates so its almost impossible to find something!

At any rate, Boone is wonderful people are friendly, there is Always something to do and for the last four nights its been in the fiftys, so no AC is needed! Oh and today I needed to cross several lanes of traffic and people actually stopped and let me go!

happeemommee, did you guys recently move to Boone? Didn't you live near Waynesville or somewhere, and then your husband was looking for work? Did your husband find work here? I live in Boone also and remember speaking with you before, around January when I lost my job, and then I got another one a month later, thankfully.

That's me! How are you? I'm glad you got another job so quickly! My husband never did find anything long term down there so we came up here so we could both finish school and atleast work part time.

Good to hear from you!

Well welcome to Boone! Been fine here, still working the same job I was able to get in February. Where are you working part time? I'm gonna PM you if I can figure out how to do it...

Lol, I'm not working anywhere yet, I have been house hunting. Ugh! But I am probably gonna waitress or do office work or something along those lines, that will work around my classes. Me and six thousand other people, huh?! Seriously tho, we are so happy to be here! We have been trying for a few years now. I love it here!
