Default Schools in Western NC

How are the schools in Hendersonville? How about Waynesville? I hear Asheville is expensive so that would be out for me. I'm a single mom of two kids. Really want a great school, safe community, not a big city but not in the boonies either.

Any suggestions from anyone? I work out of home so driving to work isn't a problem

Thank you!

As far as high schools, I've read West Henderson and Hendersonville are good. North and East Henderson less so. The county only has 4 public high schools.

All Henderson County Schools are satifactory or better. Buncombe is a different story. Clyde A. Erwin has a high dropout rate and drugs and violence are rampant.

Henderson County has some good schools; however, Polk County has only one HS and it was ranked last year in the top 1300 in the US. I know that it is a good school. My youngest son graduated from there.

You should look into the Transylvania County School System. They are ranked among the highest in the sate in all aspects. VERY safe!!! I have a 10 month old son and I wouldn't dream of sending him anywhere other than the schools in Rosman, which is where I went. From the time I went to school until now I have rarely heard of any crime in the school other than one fight between two middle school boys, that was broken up very quickly. I have never heard of any problems with weapons or crime in the schools. Transylvania County Schools all have SRO (School Resource Officers) that are deputies from the sheriff's department that stay at school all day long to ensure the safety of the students. Transylvania is also a wonderful place to live, especially for single mothers. There are so many resources for you here. And you are only 20 minutes away from Asheville or Herndersonville, but not "in the boonies"! You have all the conveniences of a big city with a small town atmosphere. It is a very safe place to live. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. There are so many things for kids to do here as well, like the Cradle of Forestry, skateboarding park, recreation department, kayaking, rafting, floating, camping, fishing, rock climbing, biking, an AWESOME toy store called O.P. Taylors, safe and accessible public parks (Franklin Park in Brevard is so fun I take my son there and I play!!!), pools, both indoor and outdoor, and so many other options!!!
Good luck with your search!!!
