Default Ashevillle....Biltmore Forest???

Okay, given the choice, would you build a house in South Asheville (Buncombe part of Fletcher near Cane Creek) or buy an existing house in Biltmore Forest (yes, the neighhborhood with the older homes, not Biltmore Park). Opinions appreciated. Thanks!!

Good Morning,
My family and I bought just off Cane Creek (Franklin Farms) about 2.5 yrs ago and have been thrilled with it. Its the best commute into Asheville (up 74A) although you can see that it will be developed heavily over the coming years. The schools are the best in Asheville and the area is very peaceful. THe only drawback is being 20 minutes from anywhere, but you get used to it. Property prices are going up quickly so the longer you wait the more you'll have to spend. There are some deals if you are vigilant. Moderator cut: removed

Biltmore Forest is an old established, prestigeous area that will always be a good investment.

mom2hn,

Me too! I am now grown and living in Charlotte but I still love that neighborhood, the whole Biltmore Village area. I don't think anyone would go wrong buying there.

Default Biltmore Forest vs...South Buncombe County?

Consider the services! Police respond quickly in BF - Buncombe County? you rely on The Sheriff's Dept., which could be dicey. BF is close to the thriving downtown Asheville scene. Many residents now go downtown for dining, and other gatherings which just 10 years ago was unheard of doing. BF is close to the cultureal activity of the area - 3 miles away. BF taxes are relativley low and yoru RE investment is pretty secure, since BF will not see much downside risk.
What ever $ you invest in BF - you should get it back. Other areas - not as sure. You're out there on your own, in comparison.
I think, if you got that kind of money for housing, then BF is a good and safe bet.

It's a landslide already, but another vote for Biltmore Forest. Great schools, leafy, mature landscapes, it's own police force & city hall. Great public and private schools. Convenient to almost everything. So nice...

The only downsides to Biltmore Forest that I'm aware of are that (1) it's pricey, (2) it's located in a generally congested area, (3) it's older. We know a realtor who loves living there for all of the reasons mentioned by other posters--but she admits, with a laugh, that she can't plug more than three things in at the same time without blowing a circuit (a bit of hyperbole there, I'm sure). And she tells us that the roads through BF are public roads: motorcycle and bicycle clubs enjoy BF, too--at the expense of its residents.
