will there still be leaves left this weekend?
WNC is supposed to get a rain storm on FRI. Will there still be leaves on the trees later on, or do these kinds of storms typically knock out most of the leaves still on the trees?
Can anyone comment from past experience? thanks!

Nope, we've got plenty of leaves, even some you can rake at my house! The higher elevations are past peak, but still pretty. Between 2500' and 3000' are still spectacular, and below 2000' haven't even really started. I'm at 1600' and we're just beginning to turn.
The mountains are supposed to stay cloudy/foggy on Sunday (AVOID the parkway!!), but down towards the foothills in the Lenoir area will be nice. NOT a good weekend to see the leaves in the mountains.
This is just a general statement for everybody: Please, please, please, if foggy and/or rainy, PLEASE burn your headlights!!!! You have no idea how hard it is to see you in the fog without them. This is a major pet peave of mine with visitors and locals alike that are driving up and down US-321 between Lenoir and Blowing Rock. You can be in the clear one second, and not see your hand in front of you the next. Especially you folks in the very popular pale champagne, gray, and silver vehicles.
The last front like this one resulted in a fatality on 321, the mother of an 11 yr old girl was killed when a pickup crossed the centerline in the drizzly, foggy conditions. Her daughter was in the car as well and suffered critical injuries. This is NOT the flatland. Please use extra (reasonable) caution while driving up here, especially when it's raining or foggy.
Y'all be blessed and be safe!

We still have lots of green trees in the Asheville area.
We really need the rain, but it ain't hit the ground yet. Though often forecast, fronts coming from the west often fall apart when they hit the mountains along the TN/NC border, thus the drought we are in.

Leaves in W. NC
I was there in Mitchell county and came home last Sunday, 10/19, and the leaves were falling at a pretty good clip. I would wager to guess they are almost gone by now in Mitchell county. However, the Charlotte area was just starting to change good when we were on the way to the airport that day. Peak happens up in the higher elevations like Mitchell county/Bakersville area than in Asheville and Charlotte. You'll probably be able to get some pretty good pics of those areas this weekend.
