Papa Beers is a great Mexican Restaurant on 25 south, above Hendersonville. They have great chips and brown salsa. The Boat House has a great sausage and biscuit Brunch on Sunday's.

County PLUS City taxes because of annexation
The taxes are much higher for most of Asheville.
City plus county.

French Bar...ya know, we went there twice. The owners were so nice, so was our server/waitstaff. However, it is so strange in there. Hard to get a good feel. Not a real warm place, and almost seems like a gay bar when you walk in? What do you feel when you go in there?
What do you think about carolina Day? I have heard the drugs there are even easier ?
Nice to read your info. I am a mom of 3, it is valuable to me.

Yeah, S. Asheville needs some more places to dine.
As for the French Bar... I guess because I've known the owners forever I don't feel uncomfortable, but I can see how others might. Plus, they need to work on their menu a little more and think about bringing down their prices.
Something people moving to Asheville should know... many places will seem like a gay bar or restaurant. Not because they are, but because there is a HUGE gay population. So if gay people make you uncomfortable... not the place for you.
As for Carolina Day, it has a reputation of being a super snotty and elite school. Drugs ARE rampant. Hell, half the "homeless" kids you see downtown come from wealthy families. Many of them graduates from Carolina Day. Some don't want to be construed as rich so they go in the opposite direction. You will see people in their late teens, early 20s, sitting around on the sidewalks with their homeless friends. They will have dreads, piercings, and tons of ink. They will panhandle. When they're finished they will then jump into their Land Rover. Those kids are called Trustafarians by the locals.
Many, many poseurs in Asheville. Just my opinion.

Oh my. That is terribly weird about the rich/ pretending to be homeless.
Not uncomfortable around gay people, just that we had our kids with us the first time. We were not sure we were supposed to be there.
Did you go to TC?

No, I went to Erwin. Not a bad school when I went. Many of my friends went on to successful careers. Lots of people got into UNCCH and Duke.
You're totally welcome at the French Bar! Kids too! Although I don't think the menu would appeal much to the kids.
There is an AWESOME sandwich place called Loretta's on Patton downtown. It's a little hole in the wall, but oh so good. Two Brother's on Charlotte Street makes a damn good sandwich.

True, if you live within the city limits of a municipality such as Asheville or Hendersonville, you will also pay an additional city property tax.

Downtown has lots of really good places.
We like Tupelo and Mellow Mushroom! And The Lobster trap was good.
Will try Lorettas.
Thanks again.

Have you tried Apollo Flame? That's close to S. Asheville and very tasty! I miss it!

Hav'nt been to many restaurants on the south side as where we plan to move is up north in madison county. Did go to a Mexican place way south almost to Skyland, was OK but real hot inside. On our last trip our friends wanted to try FIG, pretty good but pricey. I would put in a plug for Zen Sushi on the north side, have been there several times, always excellent sushi, better than Ichiban.
IMHO.
