It's a mobile society. If there's no jobs in one area, go to another. I had to go 400 miles away.

Too small of a sampling to be meaningful.

Largest employers in the Boone area:

Appalachian State University
Appalachian Regional Healthcare
Watauga County Board of Education

Hard to say, but that factor also applies to the rest of NC too. I wouldn't be too concerned with the actual numbers, but how does a specific area compare to the statewide average of 6.7%. Is a specific county significantly better or worse?

Look at these for an idea about jobs, keeping in mind that the larger employers don't usually advertise in the paper. App State has their own listings on their website, Appalachian State University.

Mountain Times, www.ncesc.com.

I've been unemployed for two years, unable to find employment that pays a fair wage for a single wage earner with a disabled adult child. I've been cleaning homes ($25/hr) but that market is being flooded with out of work women and the available positions are drying up because of the economy. My daughter just lost her best and wealthiest client. I'm down to 2 clients every other week.

Also check out Samaritans Purse, but one of their requirements is that you share their belief system. That rules out a lot of folks.

Good luck!
Tracey
