Default Mountain Property in McDowell County

My husband and I are considering buying a lot in a log home development in McDowell County. Can anyone give me some info on the area? The mailing address is Nebo but the development is not far from Marion.

It's rural. Marion is small but has a walmart, etc. It's right off of 40. Nebo isn't too far away from there, just a few miles up I40 and off the road a bit.

Have you visited this area? Is this going to be a retirement home or a place you're going to live in and commute to work from?

Do a search on these boards about Marion. It's rural, not real friendly or open to new residents. If you like to socialize other than at a Baptist Church you may not love the area. Plus.......the economy is in the tank.
If you are thinking of moving there make sure you can find a doctor who is taking new patients.
I am familiar with the area you are looking at. It is beautiful with great year around weather. It isn't built up yet.

Default South of Marion

Hi there, I purchased a lot and built a cabin in a gated community south of Marion off 226. We are moving there in about two weeks. We take care of our 4yr old grandson, so we have done research on schools etc. A Good point about Dr's was brought up. We will need a good pediatric Dr for him. Have a wonderful one in FL. (wish we could take him with us) We built in 2005 and love the area. Yes, you have to drive to go shopping.. We go to Forest City, Marion, Hickory, Morganton. Forest City has a super walmart, but it takes about a half hour or so to get there.. The people we have met are very nice. I am a RE Broker and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the area too. Good Luck to you and Happy New Year! Wendyb

The community we purchsed a lot in is Grandview Peaks which is off of Rt 226. We still live in NJ and plan to build in 3 years. I'm still a little nervous about living in such a rural area, but it is beautiful. Good luck with your move and Happy New Year to you too.

My husband's family owns land in Nebo and they wanted to sub divide it. It was then, after owning this land for nearly 20 years, that they were told the lot is not buildable. Not sure why, and they haven't gone up there yet to actually try and get somewhere ( they're waiting until after the holidays) but will be going soon. My point is...be careful!

Usually when a piece of land is not buildable it's because the land won't perc. You should always insist on a perc test BEFORE purchasing any land.

Lol, That's what I would have told em too, but they bought it before I even knew them. However, that's not the case here, they are saying it's not buildable.Which makes no sense to me because I've seen ppl literally move mountains to make a spot work. I think I may have to go with them when they go to Marion. lol, woohoo...
