Move to Lake Lure?
Can someone tell me what Lake Lure is like as a place to raise small children? How are the schools? Are there other kids who live there year-round? Are there accessible activities for kids (like soccer, ballet, karate, swim team, etc.)? Thanks.

There aren't any schools in Lake Lure. The closest elementary school is Sunny View Elementary in Polk County. It may also depend on which side of the lake you're on as to which schools are closest. The closest elementary school in Rutherford County is Pinnacle Elementary.

Lake Lure is a beautiful, expensive retirement and vacation community - not many young families actually live there. Look to live closer to Hendersonville for all the things you are looking for.

Lake Lure may not be your best bet. The demographic definitely older. However the city council is trying to diversify the population. It looks like there will be a charter school about 2010 and a YMCA as well. Right now your school choices(depending on address) is Henderson or Rutherford Counties(maybe Polk). Neither of which are real close. There is an after school program in Lake Lure but it is more of a bus drop off and pick up point. The kids are supervised until the parents pick them up.
For future reference here is a link to an article about the school. The Mountain Breeze News for Lake Lure NC, Chimney Rock NC, Bat Cave NC, and Greton NC

We vacation in Lake Lure and even bought a lot up there but I don't think you would want to live there year round with small kids. I just don't think there is enough to do. It is a great place to visit!!!

I was raised in Lake Lure. From the time I was 3 years old until I was 12; I am 16 now. I loved living there, and it is a place away from the world. I mean I was not influenced by many of the negative things our generation is these days. Kids that live there live there all year. The best way to get to know some other families iis to go to the youth center. We always played outside and we only watched TV about 2-3 hours a day. There are not any schools in Lake Lure, but I would suggest sending your children to Edneyville Elementary. Some schools like Sunny View won't accept kids from Lake Lure because we don't pay taxes for that area. The last time I went to visit there were kids that came from different communities in the area. The youth center is right beside the visitor's center. I don't really know what's going on there lately, who's running it and all because the people who have operated it for the past 3 years moved away. I think it would be a great place to raise kids. It's always a blast going to the Dogwood festival and art shows. The Geneva is the best place to go in the summer rather than the beach, which truth to tell is pretty disgusting once you hear all the stories. You can get great food at the Geneva and some local families go too. Also Halloween is great because all of the little stores in the Village always give stuff out. Christmastime is fun. They always have breakfast with Santa at the Lake Lure Inn and they usually have a boat parade. Once you get some connections with people you will find out about a lot of activities. If you want your kids in sports they usually have t-ball and softball in Bill's Creek. If you have any other questions, I would be more than happy to help.

If you're thinking of moving there keep in mind that the tax burden is much higher than even Asheville ($2220/resident):
Lake Lure: $3,347
Biltmore Forest: $3,136
Weaverville: $2,717
Maggie Valley: $2,631
Murphy: $2,259
However, if you can afford Lake Lure you can probably afford the extra taxes!

Hey, I just found out a few weeks ago that they will have the charter school up and running next year. It is called the Lake Lure Classical Academy. It looks like it is going to be great. You can google it if you want. I hope that you choose Lake Lure as a place to live. Some of the nicest and most generous people I know live there.

What a wonderful and refreshing post!
What a great outlook, why wouldn't someone want to raise their little ones in this environment?
I do agree with you about Geneva, what a great little place.
