I know I have been looking at comparable prices because we put our house up for sale (moving closer to the kids) We love our mountain home, but when you start looking around.... for $150K, you get an older shack, not clean (meaning repairs), and sometimes a modular home. Our town Franklin, NC is very nice for retirement as there are many active retired people here with a new VA medical center as well. Our place is centered exactly between Franklin and Sylva. Asheville and the airport are 60 miles away. The Greenville, SC airport is just two hours away and a very nice drive. They have great airfare deals too. Alot of people south of town drive to Atlanta, but I would much rather not deal with Atlanta...
Good luck to you!

We just built our future retirement home in Burnsville in Yancey County. It's a great little town if you like it quiet. Less than an hour to Asheville, close to Little Switzerland, Mount Mitchell. Lots of hiking around. Good luck!

We were looking for the same... space for the dogs, and close enough to UNCA to be active at Reuter Center. Couldn't find anything, and ended up in Burnsville. Bought a little cabin for $150K... two bedrooms, one bath and a loft on an acre. Awesome views!!! Nice and sturdy and clean, but needs the kitchen gutted. Land is really too steep for a decent dog yard, and it's nearly an hour to UNCA, so not perfect... but at least I'm finally here!!!

What did you decide on? We have less $ than you. The house here is basically sold. I am just hoping for an acre near a big park or near organic farmers or great neighbors. People can't imagine what can be done w/less than $100,000, but I've bought house after house w/less in great places. Looking to move near where you said you are looking. Please keep me posted.

The Mt Airy area is not really that flat...honest...but if you think it is try McDowell county. Marion is a really nice area.

Depending on how far out you want to be Murphy, NC fits your description and property would be much less expensive than right around Asheville. I know many properties here both with cabins and without. I have some lots for sale and also a beautiful 6.99 acre mountain top piece very near Hwy 64 and The Sanctuary. I also have a fixer upper house that could either be repaired or removed on a 1.4 ac lot with a trout stream (approx 20' wide) in the front. Let me know if I can help you or if you would like some pictures. I am not sure you can get a house and five acres but you never know .

Hayesville, NC is a great place to retire. If you come here and find a builder yourself and find a piece of property that is "for sale by owner" you could get a nice place to live for a fair price.
Most of the foreclosed properties are either too expensive or the owners trashed the places before moving.

We are a year or so away from moving so our plan is to
check out all the possible places this summer to start narrowing it down.
I may still work PT for a few years ,but as a Speech Therapist I can work in schools, nursing homes or a hospital .
We are starting to enjoy fishing more and more so we want to find out more about the Lake Hickory and Lake Rhodhiss area. Seems near 40 & not too far from Asheville & Charlotte for shopping and airport .
Anybody know what house prices are in that area and neat towns
near there??
