Second home in Murphy?
A second home, huh? Well, I live in Murphy and the quality of living is superb! The air quality and water quality is one of the highest in the nation! No toxic waste dumps and outdoor activities galore! This area is a clean environment for a family or retirement. Very slow pace and packed with friendly people. Virgin land is still here, but if you are looking for a second home, maybe a chalet, then maybe I can be of help. Let me know, ok? We are moving to Tucson this fall.

The air quality there is NOT some of the best in the nation. The Murphy area gets smog / pollution from Atlanta and Chattanooga. And out in Hangin Dog, Violet and Beaverdam they have some of the HIGHEST cancer rates in the nation!

I've heard different theories. Everything from the pollution theory, because the area somehow catches all the poluttion from Atlanta, Chattanooga, KNoxville and Asheville, to something about the utility lines. There are a lot of old school electric lines overhead out there. I don't know that anyone can explain it, because you would think it would be the opposite. I mean, people stop on the side of the road and get water out of the mountains! I just know while I was at TCC we debated this regularly.

We are looking for a second home to get out of the heat of south Florida. Also another reason is taxes and wind storm insurance, when you are close to the beach you would not believe the premiums on a home, we have had enough! We have just starterd searching, we have friends that live in Cleveland and mentioned Murphy. We have not made a decision of exactly where yet.

I don't have facts about the pollution/smog levels being all caught in Murphy but I would think it would depend on how the wind blows.
I do know that in Peachtree area some people were up in arms due to Moog Industries not doing something right and polluting the ground water in the area. I believe it's been cleaned up for the 2nd time in the past 10 yrs. You should always try to receive the local newspaper in the area your interested in so you can find out what's happening. Cherokee Scout is also online.
Depending on if you purchase land out in the country or in a subdivision with an HOA, make sure they test the well yearly. Where we purchased they check it a couple of times a year and do whatever to clean it if there's a build up of whatever. You can also install a reverse osmosis system in your home. Wherever you decide I wish you the best of luck and enjoy yourselves.

Murphy is the city to me! LOL We live in the county next to cherokee county, Clay County. It is very peaceful and beautiful. We have a mountain spring we use for drinking water. It is sooo nice. But we are "retiring" to Virginia so are moving away soon too. I hate to leave this place, anyone who moves here loves it.
We have been here for 9 years and have been welcomed by the community.
I will miss the clean mountain air, the cows mooing, and the horses across the road.

Buying In Murphy...???
We moved from FL and looked at Murphy as the place to go. BUT, it was much too small and a little too quiet. The sidewalks roll up at night for sure! We chose Franklin because it was much closer to big shopping in Asheville and Waynesville. Southwestern Community College has campus centers from downtown Franklin, to Cherokee. Medical facilities are 10 miles to Franklin or just over the mountain to Sylva to Westcare- 13 miles. So be careful just in case you want more options. Franklin finally passed the mixed drink law, so at least it's available in restaurants and bars IF you want it. Schools are good and always improving. There are alot of FL roots here, but nas frequent as Murphy (I don't think)
Good luck to you!
