Valle Crucis, Banner Elk...considering those areas
It is a cool, misty rainy......somewhat gloomy day here in Central Florida.... I am longing to move to North Carolina. The sooner the better! Last time we were up there we stayed in Linville and rode (hubby and I ride motorcycles) around Banner Elk, Valle Crucis, Blowing Rock, etc. and we just loved it there! I think we are narrowing it down to Banner Elk or Valle Crucis, maybe even near Sugar Mountain or outside of Blowing Rock. We also like outside of Waynesville...........Sylva, Balsam area. My son was looking recently at pictures from Banner Elk and Valle Crucis and when he saw the snow........ that was it for him! He was sold on those areas. I have been researching sites for warm clothing and boots, etc. Florida is wack in the winter time.........freezing.............then hot.......then cold.........(OK our cold, not up north cold)....but no consistency. I am OVER the LONG HOT summers....No change of seasons, I really want that. I have been born and raised in Fl. I am 42 and I feel it is time for a change. Thanks for any input.......... Painted Lady

So what kind of jobs would you need to find when you get to NC? Those areas ARE spectacular, but they are rural and have no industry. You'd most likely need to drive a great distance to find work - and even then unless you are qualified to work at the university or in the medical field the pickings would be slim. MANY of us would live up in the beauty of the mountains if we only had the job to support it!

I'm from Fl and I live in Avery County. I LOVE it here!!! I see you are an artist and I am dying to take art classes but the closest ones are Boone and Asheville. Hurry up and move and start art classes in Banner Elk!

I am a REALTOR and artist........I can really work anywhere. I have been doing research on getting my R. license there and also checking out brokerages I might want to interview with when we get up there. We really won't know the exact area and place we will ultimately be until we have a R. agent from there help us to find what we are looking for. My husband works in the Golf Course industry. He has built them all over the country and he also can work inside or out of a Golf Course.... he has experience doing that too. As for art lessons....... If I had an art studio on the property I would consider that. ~*~ Painted Lady

Plan to stick with the art thing - realtors in NC aren't working much these days and that area is fairly well saturated with them I'm afraid. Golf courses are also not in abundance in the area, though there are a few.
Blowing Rock Country Club - Guest Area

I am a gallery represented artist here in Florida. The paintings will stay here in Florida w/the Galleries and I will find representation when I get to NC. I did have some paintings and prints in a Waynesville Gallery. I have some of my work in the Dillsboro Chocolate Factory in Dillsboro. As long as I am w/in a semi-close distance to a decent city....ie: Asheville/Waynesville.....even Blowing Rock would be good.... I will be fine. I don't give up easy. I am not worried about too many Realtors....we deal with that here in Fl. too. As for hubby............he will find something. I was doing Murals and Faux painting....but no more. ~*~ Painted Lady

You would do well to find a few places that would hang your work in both the Asheville and Blowing Rock areas - these are tourist spots and people there do appreciate good art work. You will LOVE the NC mountains - one of my favorite places in the whole world to be

As a native w/ lifelong ties to the Valle Crucis area . . . I would suggest you choose some place around Asheville unless you will teach at AppState and live in Boone.

Valle Crucis is filled w/ opportunistic carpet baggers and swamp yankee's slowly sucking the quiet valley charm out of this town. (Viva la Valle Crucis!)

HA HA HA!! Well, sadly, a lot of newcomers w/ attitude have moved into the area but most of them are seasonal and the ones that aren't seasonal usually don't stay long after figuring out that living there is not the same as visiting.
