Not all Floridians are blood sucking small town killers!
It has always been a dream of mine to live in N. Carolina. I vacationed there as a child every summer. There is a beauty and magic there- I love it!
I find what I have read to be very disturbing. I thought this stupidity was concentrated mostly in Florida. I am a native Florida girl, who is bitter about the Florida that has been ripped away. It is so gone.
I plan on leaving Florida- the desolate wasteland of stripmalls, unconnected communities, and rude people! These people disrespect Florida for all of it's beauty, and culture- as others do NC. Floridians are victims too of this practice.
I will be moving to NC summer 2008. With my bitterness I bring a hatred for $$ developers, and those who have no respect for the culture of smalltown America. I was just in the Tryon/Columbus town "shopping". I saw that huge bald spot the posters remarked about. I thought it was from logging or something. How disappointing about the housing devts. I loved those towns just the way they are- Gorgeous!!!!!
Is the Columbus/ Tryon area senctenced to small town death?
Food for thought: Not all Floridians are blood sucking small town killers! Some of us just crave the small towns that were taken from us and just want it back for our children to have the same quality of life that we were given growing up.
Thanks!

WNC is beautiful...i have been coming here for years and recently purchased 50 acres at the top of a mountain in burnsville. i completely intend to leave the land untouched..other than the small cabin on it. i live in florida because that is where i can make enough money to afford both homes but my home and heart are in WNC. There is a tremendous push in Florida to move to NC. its not really advertised but in the real estate community, its big business. I have lived in Fl for 36 years and have watched it be destroyed with developments. i am terrified that will happen to NC. Since i bought the land last year, i have had four offers to buy it....it is just up the road from wolf laurel preserve. i considered all four because of the profit value but when i found out they were all going to develop the land, i pulled out. what really is frightening is that the land is extremely cheap when compared to florida and the taxes are about 80% less than our fl home. this is going to bring lots and logs of people here....im afraid it will be soon

Is Columbus and Tryon part of all of these developments? If so are these for young families, or retiremet age folks? Is Polk County building any new schools to compensate for the growth?
Just curious?????

The Cliffs development company has started hacking up their next mountainside, in Swannanoa. Unspoiled, and seen by everyone in Swannanoa and everyone driving on I-40, the ridge separating the Swannanoa river valley and Fairview was one of the more beautiful left in Buncombe county.
Now we will all enjoy looking at mansions instead of trees... but at least the affluent transplants and retirees will have a great view from their great rooms...

Bummer - I wish that at the very least if they are going to continue this wanton destruction that there would be some laws about not spoiling any ridgetops, and making it so that the homes cannot be seen - like they do out in Santa Fe.
I am also a bit distraught that in my little neighborhood of Kenilworth Forest, someone is trying to build a 60 condo development on a small parcel - this in a single family neighborhood behind the mall, off a dead-end street which is the ONLY WAY IN OR OUT of the neighborhood, and also very stupidly was allowed to be a second entrance for the $%*& mall there. Now 60 more households? It's just ridiculous. Our neighborhood is fighting it, and actually has been for years (before we bought there) with some success, but it is looking like this time we may not win.

Did you know that Polk Co was the ONLY county in NC without a WalMart?
Tryon has a fantastic SMALL daily paper. Tryon Daily Bulletin | The world's smallest daily Web site
My daddy and stepmom live in the area. My daddy belongs to the Tryon Rotary Club so he feels like a big part of the area. We almost moved to Tryon last fall. Liz

Most of the new developments are targeted to those retiring, but I wouldn't say they're "exclusively" for retirees. Bright's Creek and White Oak are both centered around golf, others have an "equestrian theme." Most of them have a high price tag, so in that aspect I wouldn't think of them as geared toward young families.
Polk County Middle School opened for the 2005-2006 school year and consolidated all of the county middle schools (Polk Central, Saluda and Tryon) as Polk County High did in 1992. A 12,500 square foot addition was finished this summer at Tryon Elementary, providing eight new class rooms. Lots of improvements were made last summer, including new windows, at several of the county schools.
In another post above you asked if Columbus and Tryon were sentenced to small town death.
Tryon has been very protective of how it grows. I can't even count a full hand of buildings that have been built in the past ten years. Saluda is the same way.
Columbus, on the other hand, was first doomed by the Interstate. Between the I-26, U.S. 74 and N.C. 108 interchange and Columbus being the center of a fast growing county, more growth will be inevitable. Fifteen years ago there were three gas stations, Hardee's, McDonald's, Waffle House, and Food Lion at the interchange. Everything else is new. The hill behind CVS and Wendy's came all the way to 108. If you think the scalped section of Chocolate Drop is bad (which it is), you should have seen when the trees were first cut on that hill. Acres and acres of red clay.

I have a feeling Wal-Mart will come soon. If not in Polk County, right across the state line in Landrum, S.C.
Tell your father I like the clock tower. My dad is in the Tryon Kiwanis Club.
