It's official
Asheville is #2 in NC in taxes and fees imposed on citizens and businesses, second only to Charlotte.
Come on city council, are you going to let Charlotte relegate us to second palce

Asheville Native: I think this is worth noting and glad you brought it up.
Does anyone have figures for in-migration to Buncombe county? I have a theory.

It's just the bright light shining on the ugly reality of having a socialists majority on city council.

It really isn't as bad as portrayed. If you read the report Asheville is #2 among the largest cities with a tax burden of $2220 per resident. Compare this to smaller towns and Asheville does much better:
Lake Lure: $3,347
Biltmore Forest: $3,136
Weaverville: $2,717
Maggie Valley: $2,631
Murphy: $2,259
Also, the study admits that resort areas with a lot of tourism assess taxes that the local residents don't have to pay, such as hotel room taxes. Also, because of all the tourists floating around they pay a large portion of the various other sales taxes so the locals aren't shelling out for all the tax burden. Then there are the second home owners who are not residents but pay a portion of the local property tax burden. So the actual tax burden on bonafide residents of Asheville is lower than the reported value. See, there are advantages to living in a tourist mecca, bring'em on as W. used to say!

It's a free country, and Onslow County is only a bus ticket away! (and I'll be happy to pitch in for the ticket -- we'll call it my contribution to the collective good)
