You've been given lots of wonderful suggestions for your visit to Asheville and the area... enough to do for several visits.

As a frequent visitor to Asheville, I have to agree with Asheville Native about parking in downtown. I haven't ever been towed (knock on wood), but I did receive an exhorbitant parking ticket one time when I was only 5 minutes late getting back to my car after visting the Southern Highland Craft Guild Fair. Learned my lesson. Parking deck fees might be higher than metered spaces (if you can even find a metered space), but decks definitely give you more flexibility for timing your visit.

I agree whole heartedly with this statement! Definitely should park in a deck. I would suggest either the Rankin Ave. Deck, the Wall Street Deck or the deck on Biltmore Avenue just down from the New French Bar. I guess it depends on how much you want to walk to get to places as to which one you should choose. I think though for a relatively fit person you can walk all of downtown quite easily.
