I think Asheville is perfect just the way it is. I hope it can be preserved - the downtown is just the right size for me. Just the right amount of everything. I moved there because I love what the place is, and don't want to change a thing!

Coffee shops, etc...
woa, woa, woa, guys, don't take it in the offensive, why are you so angry? Calm down, don't sweat the small stuff, no need for anger.
Actually I liked Ashville so much that thought it deserved to be larger, a super cool town. What's wrong about it? It's actually a very positive comment. Anyway, why is everyone so enraged? We must live with our own ideas and respect each other's differences. This is what makes us human and truly interesting. Can anyone imagine if we were all Liberals? Or Conservatives? Or Neo-Nazzis, or only Blacks or only Whites, or only blondes, brunettes, gays, non-gays, gosh, what a horrible world this wouldn't be! Rich or poor, smart or stupid, whatever we think we are or call each other, we may not want to admit it, we all need each other and each other's creative mind and affection. Everything but anger please, for anger does not take anyone anywhere but to only disasters. Why blaming each other because one is from NY and the other from Alabama, one from Mexico and the other from FL...who cares anyway, is this really so important, after all? What would everyone do if some nasty species of extra-terrestrials popped-up from some other galaxy and invaded our planet? Would we still think the same about each other?
Remember, taste is something we must not discuss. What is right for some may not be right for some others. If we want to be accepted and respected for what we are, we must accept and respect others for what they are. As long, off course, we do not harm each other being whatever we are. Be happy, smile, be cool! Live and let live, be open to new ideas.

Asheville is so liberal that it is really a fledgling Socialist form of government.
The goal to eliminate all homelessness in less than 10 years is a clear indication of the agenda to tax those with homes, and provide free homes to those without on the backs of taxpayers. The homeless person doesn't even have to seek treatment for or remain sober or off of drugs to qualify for a free place to live.
There is a council person named Robin, but as a body they are acting like Robin Hood, and robbing from those of even meager means and handing it over to those that choose not to provide for themselves.
Know what they say, "build it and they will come" and when word in the homeless network gets out that Asheville is giving away free places to live, they will come, and come, and come, and come.

Regarding the 10 year homelessness eradication, I didn't know the plan was to give away free homes. Actually, I haven't heard what the plan is. From what i know, it is the many church-based groups such as ABCCM, as well as the Manna food back and Habitat for Humanity that are "giving away" so much to those that "choose" to be homeless.
I admire our community's willingness to reach out to those on the lower end of the economic ladder. With housing prices as they are, it's getting harder and harder for poor families and those on fixed incomes.
Liberal, probably. Socialist, no.

There is EVERYTHING wrong with liberals. they are pretentious, closed minded and anti American. I am no Republican and hate the ultra right also. Were are all the centrist Libertarians? Most of America is in the middle anyway!

I moved from near the Bay area in California so I have seen this all before. I will tell you what I saw when I visited a 3 weeks ago (downtown only): pink and purple hair, mohawks, gay couples, homeless people playing hacky sack in the middle of the city. In my opinion it seems very liberal in the city. In the "burbs" of Asheville....I couldn't tell you. Everybody was very friendly and polite and I think based on what I saw the quality of life would be very good.

What could I expect living in Asheville? Does it have a good live music scene?

Asheville has a wonderful music and art scene. However, if you are afraid of "whacko liberals" and "yuppies", you may want to consider Hendersonville or Arden, where the crowd is far older and conservative. Asheville has a thriving gay community, and probably the most vibrant lesbian communities I have seen in North Carolina. There are plenty of grungy "hippies" working in the restaurants and shops Asheville, and the overall atmosphere is decidedly more environmentally/socially conscious.
What about Nashville, TN instead? The politics there are more conservative and there's no doubt about the music scene.
