We went to Looking Glass Falls 3 yrs ago and it was awesome. I swam right under the waterfall.. Yes that water is freezing (about 55 degrees!!) but you can walk with the kids along the rivers edge and looks for stuff.. My boys loved it!!

Also, Tam, if you continue up the park road after Looking Glass, a ways up on the left is "Sliding Rock Falls," and whole families in summertime and in swimsuits and cut-offs go up the steps and actually slide right down this gigantic smooth rock at an easy angle, with water pouring down it, and everybody winds up in the pool at the bottom, and they go back up the steps and do it again. There is also an observation deck that you can just watch all the activity, of course.

By the way, the road that everybody is talking about, that has these two waterfalls, it is located just as you go into Brevard, the park is marked and the entrance is on the right. There's just one road that goes into Brevard. In other words, if you didn't turn into the park, you'd wind up right in the middle of Brevard. So, simply head on down to Brevard from Asheville or Hendersonville, and it's a well-marked turn to the right near the city limits to get onto that park road that goes up to the two waterfalls..

In addition, if you continued and continued even further up that park road, past both falls, you wind up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and within seeing distance on the right is the Pisgah View Inn, a very fun place to have lunch, lots of people who ride on the Parkway will stop in there. And if you have good brakes, you can continue on past the Inn, back towards Asheville, and end up at the bottom of the hill where the French Broad River flows and various exits that go north and right into Asheville.

It's sort of a loop trip you could make, leave south out of Asheville and go to Brevard, turn up the park road and enjoy the falls, and then take the Blue Ridge Parkway back to Asheville, stopping first for lunch at the Pisgah Inn.
