Because I've met lots of nice folks in really poorer areas of the world who were total sweethearts.
And met many nasty, mean people who had nicer, "well-kept" homes, but had no qualms about harassing or terrorizing their neighbors either!
Even as a kid growing up, we had a neighbor who'd regularly go out and kill all the squirrels in the yard, b/c he didn't like them. We lived in a decent neighborhood and this neighbor had the nicest and largest home on the streeet!
He didn't like the fact we had dogs either. Though we were one of the few homes on the street that did not get broken into.....probably b/c of the dogs' presence.
Just because you are rich does not always guarantee you'll be a nice person, unfortunately.
Just because you poor, doesn't automatically mean, you are mean and a criminal either.
I know there are bad spots in AVL and other towns, but don't paint a broad brush over poorer folks.. I'm sure they didn't want to be poor, but were often not given enough opportunities to advance and get out of poverty.
Which brings me to another point. There's dozens of folks who are falling into poverty in all sections of AVL! It's a tough place to make a living!

How do you think 'those' places got so bad in the first place? Because no one raised their voice to say this ain't the way it is supposed to be, and by completely ignoring the problem, your approach, and the problem grew through the complacency of these fools, who were too busy, too uncaring, to self-involved, or just don't care about anything unless it is in their immediate backyard.

I ain't your buddy, but your complacency is the problem. Why don't YOU move next to one of those cesspools, after all you support the stench they emit by your acceptance of the status quo and complacency.

I'm a firm believe in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but these cesspools are broken and sticking your head in a dark place or attacking those that do protest is counter productive enabling the drug dealers and criminals that are drawn to these cesspools like flies to a pile of dung, all on the backs of property owners.

I think the nicest areas of AVL are the northern parts and the south part, Biltmore Forest, which is the ritzy part of the whole town.
Not sure I'd like to live in a forest though....sort of too shady & dark for me.
Must be hard to have a garden in that neighborhood also.

How come there are so many wild turkeys in the town of AVL, btw?
I think that east Asheville would be east of the mall and Tunnel Rd. The area from the French Broad River to the mall is central Asheville. West Asheville is the area west of the river. North Asheville would be Grove Park, Beaver Lake, and the golf course community up there. South Asheville is the area down south of Mission Hospital.

The Turkeys follow the bears into town.

East Asheville = Kenilworth, Haw Creek, Beverly Hills, Riceville, Reynolds.

Biltmore Forest is actually a municipality, and not part of Asheville, though surrounded by it. I don't believe the lack of a garden bothers those in BF, but they do complain about the deer eating their landscaping.

No predators, I saw a turkey chase a cat off earlier this year.

I moved from SW fl to asheville in 2005. It seems where ever you land when you get here is where you love. I landed in West Asheville and wouldn't think of living any where else. I LOVE West Asheville. There is a project in West Asheville that as long as you live a mile or two away, you will be fine. I used to live like 2 miles from the project and never had any crime issues. Beyond that, Judging all of West Asheville by ONE complex is hardly fair especially since it is really NOT even within walking distance to "downtown west Asheville". If you are an artist, a liberal democrat, like to live in "funky" environments rather than staunchy "whites only" weathly neighborhoods; come to West Asheville. If you would rather live in a gated community where they have removed the top off a mountain without consideration for the environment, then go North or South and enjoy the malls etc. West Asheville voted AGAINST Walmart and is mostly locally owned stores. It's NOT all the same stores and restaurants you find in every other city across the country. There are theatres, local plays, local music, and people out walking. There are music venues open at night. There are tea and coffee bars with great organic food. If you want "organic, earthly, recycling, liberal, gay/lesbian, older cool homes that are being rehabbed, and an old fashioned neighborhood, come to West Asheville esp. off Haywood between Patton Ave and downtown. by the way, Asheville itself is very artsy, there is a drum circle every friday night downtown, there are lots of summer events downtown and the mountains are a fabulous view no matter what street you are on practically. Jobs, I don't know. There is not a lot of industry except for hospitality and medicine. Good place to retire on a fixed income compared to other cities as there is less judgement about "income" and riches. We are plain folk and I love it here. If you are "afraid" of crime, and you find people scaring you, then perhaps you should just come here and ask the locals. Crime happens everywhere. Our murder rate is probably the lowest I have seen in places I have lived.

Of course, the larger it gets and the more difficult the economy, the more crime you will see everywhere in this country. I think money is less important in W. Asheville than in other parts. I like it here. You are best off to come and visit and see what is happening at night time. in the North, the East and the South, the sidewalks roll up at 8 pm. West Asheville has stuff going on - and people out walking. Same with downtown.

If you want to walk your dog in a neighborhood, come to W. asheville. If you want to walk your dog in a fake, new "community" and esp if you love gates locking you in and keeping "locals" out, you would be happier somewhere else. Like Charlotte!

The average US crime index (according to city data) is 319.2

The bad news is Asheville's crime rate is higher than average at 369.5
The good news is it has gotten quite a bit better since this thread was started in 2007 where it was at 469.2.

Does it feel like the crime issues are improving in Asheville?
The majority of the crimes seem to be burglaries--only 2 murders.

Drugs are a problem, burglaries probably to sell things to buy drugs. Strictly a tourist area. You can get great arts and entertainment (buegrass, country etc.) most anywhere in a nice southern town/city. The hippies have taken over A'vl. sorry.... it's the truth.

Just out of curiosity, who deemed the west asheville neighborhood with the gutted factories and warehouses the "river arts district" ???

Looks like a bunch of abandoned buildings near a railroad yard and the ghetto which someone decided they could name "arts" and make money on. The crime rate has to be through the roof down there.

A bunch of artists decided that there was affordable space. More came. Now there are several restaurants. Soon, there will be gentrification.
