Most of the school districts are by county (with a few exceptions). Each will have a website; you can check those. Also, there is a website where most of the openings in the state will be posted.

Overall, this has not been a good year for teachers looking for work.

Hi there all you Hendersonville people, Hubby and I spent a couple of days there last Sept, and I fell in love with the downtown area. I would not like to live downtown, but would like to be close enough to join in on the fun. Hubby will be retiring in July this year. Hopefully we won't have to give our home away here in Michigan to move to NC. I think co-ordinating the sell/buy in a diff state may be very challenging. Could someone talk to me about the Taxes etc...

Wow, I was wondering if NC got much snow. Hopefully it doesn't last long. Isn't there something about yearly taxes on your car ? That is something that is real different from Michigan. I sure hope we can make a profit on our home, we have enlarged it and done so many updates to it, over the past 10yrs. We now have a total of 9 closets in our home, not including a walkin pantry. That should help sell it for women especially. We have a acre of land, garden and small orchard. Hope that appeals so someone out there.

There is a personal property tax on cars but I think it is limited to $150/yr. If you finance a house plan on closing costs of about 3%. Ours was a cash sale and ran about 1%. If you buy in an incorporated city (Asheville, Black Mtn, Weaverville, Hendersonville, Biltmore Forest, etc.) taxes will be higher since you pay both county and city taxes. If you have not visited here much I would suggest renting here to get a feel for the communities--you don't want to move in and find out you hate the neighborhood. Just about every town of any size has a funky downtown tourist area like Hendersonville, but I doubt you'd want to spend much time there once you've seen it 2-3 times--instead look for other amenities like access to shopping, arts and craft centers, colleges/universities, and civilization in general. You'll probably get tired of staring at your significant other after about 2 weeks and want to get out and do something. My wife just joined the NCCCR and signed up for several classes.

Think about whether you want to deal with a well and septic system. Some areas have good quality ground water others not so good. We have a friend in Leicester that has good water except he has to filter it twice but another couple we met yesterday has a water treatment system that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. Down on Mills Gap Rd they have a ground water contamination issue and the EPA is testing over 100 wells--the folks down there have begged the city to annex them just so they can get city water piped in!

Also, most power and phone and cable lines here are above ground so snow and ice storms take them down quickly--we've had 3 power outages here since Dec 18--one for 3 days. And when the power goes down you don't have any well water or heat--we were lucky to have gas fireplace logs to keep the house warm and the municipal water meant we didn't have to melt snow to flush the toilet or wash our faces. Have fun with your search--Larry
