Moving to Asheville area
We are planning to move to the area the first of June '09. There are 2 of us both receiving social sec disability, older adults but not official retirement age. We have a small Italian greyhound dog <12lbs & a 13 yr old cat, both well trained. We desperately need info on the different areas, and recommendations on renting a place between $600-800 mo Also we are very active people some entertainment info would be nice We are moving from San Diego County where our $1200 a month is a bargain but doesn't leave much for extras in life. Responses will be much appreciated!

I could be wrong...but I don't think you're going to find a nice place in Asheville in the $600-800 range. Have you considered smaller areas within driving distance of Asheville like Hendersonville or Rutherfordton? They would be more affordable.

I agree, finding something in that price range that won't have you asking "why did we move here" is going to be a challenge. There may be some out there but bargain-priced housing is not the Asheville's strongest point.

moving to Asheville Area
I am definitely interested in the smaller cities i,e,Hendersonville Brevard and am interested in finding out about other cities close to Ashville It definitely does not have to be Asheville Proper. One of the reasons we are moving from CA is to lower our rent. Any info about surrounding areas will be welcomed.
Thanks!

Dear Marr,
As an above poster referred to, the Mountain Xpress is a "second" newspaper for Asheville, and there are dozens of places to rent in your price range, good ones, too. Here is the link:
Classifieds: Rentals | Mountain Xpress | mountainx.com
You will find that most anywhere you live in Asheville will be convenient...it's all a matter of how the neighborhood feels to you. There were several places listed in the link that I know are wonderful places to live. Get a map of our town, and if it's located north of downtown, that will generally be a good area, plus you can literally walk to shops or town. Avoid the first few side streets close to the freeway, with the exception of those off Charlotte Street.
South has many nice areas, even tho traffic will be an issue, but compared to San Diego it's not bad. West has a few good neighborhoods, particularly those around the swimming pool near Malvern Hills... it also has its own "downtown," you could walk there, so you don't have to take that awful drive up Patton Avenue to find shopping. East has some nice areas, close to the mall too, but you gotta drive everywhere to shop. Also, Kenilworth, about the only area just south of the city inside the freeway safe enough to consider, is convenient and almost walking distance to downtown, but even it's got a few bad areas strewn thru there.
Anyhow, there ARE places in your price range, despite the warnings here, and there are some very nice ones too, but I recall back when I used to rent, I'd have to look at a lot of ugly places compared to the few I liked. So, come on to Asheville, you'll find you a good spot for sure. But I think you'll miss the ocean and warm weather...just keep that in mind, this is a mountain area, pretty far from the beaches, and we get snow... but I did see in that rental list a place or two that had a fireplace. I might add that there are some other towns in the Southeast that are MUCH cheaper than Asheville, becuz this is considered a resort town and we got about the most expensive cost of living in the South. But it is pretty here, lots of lovely neighborhoods, a fun downtown, and the views and greenery will knock you out.
Let us all know how things go. GG

Agreed. You guys can get a one, or even a two-bedroom apt in many apartment complexes around here for <$800. A nice rental house in that budget will be tougher to find.
Good luck in your move!
