mclink is on a distinguished road
Default Vacation Please!

Looking for a inn/resort in Western NC for about a weeks stay. At the most I just need a place to unwind, sit on the front porch and read, take walks, little hiking and photography. Simple but good food. Any ideas? I thought about going North to the Greenbrier, but I think that is a little too much $$$ and too formal as well.

A couple years ago I stayed at a very quiet, quaint lodge called Big Lynn Lodge in the hamlet of Little Switzerland, NC, right along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Their room rates include a full dinner and full breakfast. The room I had was small, but functional, and had a rocking chair on the deck, overlooking the many ridges of the mountains.

I'd suggest Blowing Rock

Here's a place to consider right in the village so you could walk the town and enjoy it: Blowing Rock Victorian Inn - NC Bed and Breakfast, Blowing Rock North Carolina - Private Romantic Getaways, Blue Ridge Parkway

Lake Lure is another good choice

I've suggested this one before. Balsam Mountain Inn, southwest of Asheville. An old time rustic inn. No TVs. No radios. No alarm clocks. No phones. (Oh, and no (or few) showers either - you'll soak in a clawfoot tub.) It's in a beautiful setting, has been beautifully maintained to preserve its historic charm. It has a cozy library to read in, and a long porch with rockers to enjoy the mountain scenery. There are hiking trails to explore.
