Default Going to UNC Asheville in the fall.....Questions & Comments

I did a search and read about Asheville on this forum.
I was really suprised to read about all the crime (drug problems, etc) Does anyone have any information regarding the college?
Are most of the problems away from the college? Or not.........
Ironically my parents and I thought Asheville would be a good
college for me to attend. The area looked like it would be
safe and seemed quite unique. We took a tour of UNC and
it looked like a great school and stood out from the others
we visited. I am an 18 year old girl and safety is my
number one concern.
I currently live out of state and would be going to school and working in Asheville.

Will you be living in the dorms or are you planning to rent an apartment? I think Asheville is as safe as any other city of it's size. As with any other city, you need to watch where you go. There are places that are safe and there are places that are not so safe.

You will be fine. The school does a great job and the city is a unique one. There are pockets of places that you probably do not want to go as is the case with any place. However, it is by no means the majority. Enjoy and know that you made a great decision.

Thanks for your input. It is very important to me. My parents are concerned about the
crime rate. It is suprising that Asheville is on the list for one of the Best Place's To Retire
quite often, and yet the crime rate is higher than the norm.
I will be staying the the dorms for the first year or two and then possibly living in an
apartment my last two years of school. tx

Is that ALL??? I'm really surprised. Seriously, that is not bad for out of state at all!

Well, yes I was accepted and plan to attend this fall. I am
aware of the price of the tuition. It is not the money
that scares me.......it is the crime. The good colleges in my
own state are quite more.
Thanks to everyone for your input.

Dear GNA,
The STATE colleges in your state should be FAR less tuition than going out-of-state, under any circumstances. Smaller schools not in your state university system might cost more, but the actual bigger schools under the state system should be worlds cheaper than here. Like if you live in Tennessee, UT would be a lot cheaper than UNCA.

You said you visited the UNC campus, and I wonder if you visited the true UNC campus, which is in Chapel Hill, or our branch of the multi-school UNC state system, which is in Asheville. Asheville's campus is smaller than Chapel Hill.

On the crime thing, I ditto the above posters, it's nothing so bad as living in Charlotte or Atlanta, for examples. I think if you will compare our crime rates to other larger cities in the South, it's fine here. UNCA is located in a good residential neighborhood, you should be fine over there, as long as you practice normal safety rules, like not going out by yourself at night, locking doors, paying attention to your surroundings at all times.

I don't think the OP is asking about costs, I think she's asking about crime. And in reply to that, yes there are some areas you should avoid, but for the most part Asheville is a great city.Lots to do, good vibe, very interesting people.

Just be smart, like you would need to be anywhere, don't go out at night alone, travle in pairs, etc. I have also been accepted to UNCA for the fall, but not sure whether or not that's where I'm going, but I live very close to campus. Let me know if you need anything.
