Default What type of business does Highlands NC need?

My husband and I have been looking for a business in Highlands/Cashiers for several years. We are open to other areas near here but still have not found much. A few things have been avaialable but nothing has worked out. We have 2 young kids and want a business that they can be apart of (no bars) What does this town need? We currently live in Tampa and want out before the kids get any older.

Wow, that's a tough one. Other than a trade/service/craftsman type of situation, the two that come to mind would be a restaurant or grocery/market. Problem with those is the very seasonal nature of the population in town. Prices that the local workers could afford would likely not be profitable and higher prices would limit your clientele to seasonal traffic. It's tough finding a 'normal' restaurant that is open year-round(daily), again likely a result of the much lower non-season population. Don't get me started on the prices at the two main grocery stores....

On the other hand, if you have some sort of wizard-like talent at well drilling, I understand there are plenty of folks who are having trouble finding water on their properties. Depending on the ages of the kiddos, the top of the mountain can be a lonely place in the off season. Best of luck...it's in the mid-90s here in Austin already...we might head back that way sooner rather than later!

I know, it's a tough one!! Appreciate the response. I grew up in Texas and went to school in San Marcos. Austin is beautiful but it's getting so big. Good luck and Thanks!

Highlands is a very seasonal town. The year-round population is right at 900 people but during peak season(s) tens of thousands of tourists pour in. You also have the communities of Cashiers, Glenville, Toxaway and the town of Franklin nearby which can bring in business.

Highlands is dotted with craft, antique and specialty shops of the like, but I would have to agree that maybe a general store or small grocery store would be ideal.
