moving to Clyde NC
My husband and I plus four kids are planning on moving to Clyde , NC. We found some property with an old farm house on it. Can anyone tell what they know about this town? All info would be appreciated.

Nice little unassuming valley town with good interstate access. Pretty good (Haywood County) schools. It doesn't seem to have been "discovered" yet, so there is a lot of mountain charm still there. About a half hour or so to Asheville, should the desire for a mall trip strike.

My family lived in Clyde for four years. Haywood County is a nice place to visit but it is different when you live there. Most natives really don't want outsiders in but most do tolerate us. There are few jobs and what they have are mostly seasonal -- summertime. Good luck to you.

Be sure and check out the smell from the paper mill just down the road in Canton. Ain't as bad as it used to be, but it's still a papermill.

Moving to Clyde
Dear Mom of 4,
I grew up in Clyde (on Morning Side Dr.). I had the ideal childhood. This is a small town and everyone knows everyone, so I would suggest going to church to get to know people. The friends I made as a child, I still have. The people can be a little resistant to "outsiders" but my parents were and they too loved living there. Additionally to the people and the great small town life the physical beauty of the area is unmatched. Enjoy!!!!!!

Haywood=hatred
wow. I have to be your negative. I've lived in Clyde 2 1/2 years. I have moved around all my life, and I have never (in 8+ states and 4 countries) come across people who are as unfriendly and aggressively insecure as in Haywood County. Bottom line: if you are all excited about jumping into a Baptist or fundamentalist Methodist church community and if you come with a list of hatreds (blacks, gays, non-Baptists, Yankees) then you have found yourself HEAVEN ON EARTH. Oh. And I love people who say it's a great place to raise your kids. There's a pedophile (I should say someone who acts an awful lot like one) at a local video store who loves to talk about what a great chuch guy he is....and there's a creepy guy who drives a van for a children's home who stopped me and was really inappropriate when I used to walk to work early in the morning. When I asked why he was stopping me to ask me if I was married etc...he said he's a deacon in a church...as if that should make his inappropriate behavior beyond question. And at a public community Halloween gathering, two people wore Klu Klux Klan outfits. If I'd heard more/realized the extent of the hatred and small-mindedness here, I never would have come here. Now we're thrilled to be leaving.

On the other hand, I've lived in Haywood County for 4 years now, and have never had a problem with anyone. Yes, there are folks here who are narrow-minded and do not share the same views on life and people that I do, but I have not had any issues like you have had... Granted, I did not live in Clyde, per se. I was in Waynesville and Canton (on either side of Clyde). In any given place, at any given time, one will find creeps, jerks, bigots, intolerance, violence, etc. Sadly, it has more to do with human beings than it does with location.
I want to point out that I do respect the opinion of heznc - and it saddens me to know that someone has had to deal with this type of garbage in this area - and enough so to cause a very negative impact on their perception of the County. ...But I also wanted to point out that not all experiences are the same, and I still have many, many great things to say about Haywood County, and would still recommend it as a place to live.

Lived there for about 4 years while going to HCC. My then girlfriend wanted to go to that particular school for their renowned Fish and Wildlife Management program. She's now my wife and doesn't work! Oh well. Back to your question. I'm from PA and met many, many awesome people there. Several of whom I keep in touch with. At first it was difficult being an outsider and all, but tell me one place that isn't hard to live at first. After a couple months you'll be at home just give it some time....Joe
