Reason being, it is the less commercialized and will remain that way for the most part as, the Johnson family deeded many acres years ago to the Henderson county School system and so much of acreage on 191 near West High & Rugby Schools will never be used for anything else.
Not sure exactly where, but someone had said that the same developer who built the Airport Road shopping area has purchased a large piece of land in the Mills River area which they plan to develope....anyone know any more?

Hi- we live in a really charming Village on LI in a really really (360yrs old) old charming house. We are right near the LI Sound. We want to trade the fast paced life of NY for (hopefully) a much slower paced life in NC & we want to trade the water for the mountains.

What we both really have to have is a charming town so this thread has been so helpful. Thank you all. We are stuck here w/ an unsold house but can't wait one day to come & see what Black Mountain & Hendersonville and all the other charming towns we've learned about here- are all about.

What I was wondering about is how far it takes to realistically get places. Not that we need to go anywhere! But it's so hard sometimes to tell from looking at a map- or even with Mapquest. For instance do you know how long it really takes to get to Asheville from Black Mountain? The Realtor said 45 minutes to Asheville Racquet Club but other people have said less. Some houses I see for sale in Black Mt seem closer to Lake Lure. They all look so beautiful but is Lake Lure really far from everything?

The two things I guess we need to be near are either Cheshire or Asheville Racquet Clubs & a home depot (cuz my husband is a master carpenter)

2Kate - last weekend we drove from Hendersonville all the way up to just past Mars Hill and it took us 40 minutes - mapquest said an hour - We also drove from Weaverville to Eastmoor in East Asheville and it took us 15-20 minutes - the Parkies can help you with the Asheville to Black Mountain trip as they do it often. Coming from Long Island I think you will be struck by how "uncrowded" the highways are in and around Asheville - I know the local people feel that the traffic is getting worse and I am sure from their perspective IT IS - but coming from a large metropolitan are (like we are from Chicago) the roads around Asheville are very different - multiple lanes and well marked exits - and just fewer people!

Mapquest is a great site, but they do give directions that take you the longest routes it seems. Black Mountain , NC is approx 13. miles to Asheville, NC. Lake Lure, NC is approx 23-27 miles to downtown Asheville.

Both towns are really unique and just beautiful, but one should realize that with especially Lake Lure , it is really a "touristy" town with lots of shops that sell nothing but novelty things. Not sure if you have read about Chimney Rock Park on the "net" but it is interesting ( Chimney Rock/Lake Lure, NC.)

If you will google different towns in NC that you are interested in, most times on that town's website it will give you the correct distance to the larger towns etc that are nearby.

If you eventually do move down South , you will be most welcomed!

2kate, "Black Mountain" DOES extend almost to Lake Lure, and homes are less expensive as you get farther away from B.M.'s cute downtown. BUT: Lake Lure and Bat Cave and Chimney Rock ARE "really far from everything" if by "everything" you mean the activities of downtown Asheville. Picture a triangle with AVL at the top, Hendersonville at the bottom, and Lake Lure at the right.

Goodness, it seems you've been trying for quite a while to find the answer to your question about distance and time from Black Mountain to the Asheville Racquet Club. See if this helps:

Note that we’ve never driven to the racquet club. Note that we never drive fast--always under the speed limit, usually in the right-hand lane. (We're not old--we just like the feeling in that lane.)

Another difficulty in communicating distance/time from point A to point B is this: Black Mountain is so small that it doesn't matter where your starting point is from that town, but it does matter where you mean when you're talking about Asheville!

We drive from downtown Black Mountain (which is tiny) to the eastern edge of Asheville (the Asheville Mall on Tunnel Road at Highway 70) in about 20 minutes using Highway 70 or Highway 40. Highway 70’s closer and 40’s faster, so they’re a wash. We don’t enjoy freeways; we take 70 even though it has some traffic lights because it's much more pleasant. People will tell you B.M. and AVL are 15 minutes apart, but they're not the way we drive. If the mall was having a huge sale, I suppose we'd get there in 12!!

I found two locations for the racquet club.

The first is at 200 Racquet Club Dr., Asheville 28803 (828.274.3361). If you click on the link below and repeatedly click on the MINUS SIGN to zoom out (in the left column), you’ll see the club's address at the STAR… Black Mountain at 2:00 on the clock… and the Asheville Mall on the eastern edge of Asheville where you see Highway 70 intersecting 240 (look for the number 70 on the thick gold line).

Map of 200 Racquet Club Rd Asheville, NC by MapQuest

If we drive from B.M. to east AVL in 20 minutes, you would think you could drive from B.M. to the Racquet Club Dr. address in 35 minutes—right?--just from looking at the map. BUT: the second leg of your trip takes you through the busiest part of Asheville—that is, the south, especially anything “Biltmore.” Traffic and traffic lights may sometimes double the time you need for this leg of the trip, so I’d allow—as your realtor said—45 minutes for this trip, and longer if you’re moving in rush-hour traffic. Sections of Highway 25 can be gridlock in early morning and late afternoon Mon.-Fri.

The club’s other location is at 1000 Brevard Rd., Asheville 28806 (828.665.2323). It is located on the map below at the “B”-STAR. Black Mountain is located at the “A”-STAR. The eastern edge of Asheville is still where you see Highway 70 on the thick gold line. Here you go--just scroll down to the map:

Driving Directions from 203 W State St, Black Mountain, NC to 1000 Brevard Rd, Asheville, NC

I’m going to guess it will take you about 30 minutes from B.M. to the Brevard Rd. club—again, longer if you’re moving in rush hour traffic.

Another way to find out the distance/time from anywhere to either racquet club? Call the clubs at the numbers given above. I'll bet they'll be your most accurate source of information. You'll be talking to people who live here and regularly drive from their homes to the racquet club where they work.

For Home Depots, just go to the Home Depot website for locations and then Mapquest from there. It won't matter how accurate Mapquest is about this, since you need only to know whether there's one reasonably near your home.

2kate, HOPE THIS HELPS. To the rest of you: DID I GET THIS RIGHT FOR 2kate???

Thank you so much! That definitely helps. Meanwhile I can't believe you have the presence of mind to even respond. I would be burning up if I were you. I know it's a buyers market- the WHOLE world knows it's a buyers market but when buyers just don't respond it is just rude. If they changed their mind about paying the penalty fee they should just say that & then you can respond how ever you want to respond. Anyway don't get me started. I deal with it every day.
I am just frustrated because we can't move to Asheville yet
One thing for sure- I don't even want to look until we are sold & closed
and I hope if that ever happens that we will not turn into one of those creepy buyers!!!

Well ya hafta understand you're my COMIC RELIEF, 2kate!!! I was aware of that, in fact, as I wrote to you--I was burning up!--that's why I needed you at that moment!! Some folks drink, some folks eat, some folks turn to their Forum Friends!!

You are SO wise to wait until COE before you even LOOK at houses to buy, 2kate. Our mistake was looking at houses when we thought COE was near. We agree--don't go there! You'll only create more hell for yourself.

I have a feeling you'll never turn into one of those "creepy buyers," 2kate! And if you do, it will be only because you're still temporarily insane from your seller's experience in this utterly creepy market!!!

I wish I could help you get out of your hell! Our friend Father John, who by the way just listed his own home in AZ with a realtor, likes to remind us of Winston Churchill's advice:

"When in hell, keep moving."

I can add that I grew up in Hendersonville and had a wonderful childhood. I am 27 now and living in Raleigh, but will soon be moving back that way to start a family. The weather is great, the people are nice, and the schools are good also. My childhood home was in Laurel Park - a nice, peaceful community. Someone previously had the zip code 28739 as the worst for crime - I think this is mainly because many people have vacation homes on the mountain that are empty a lot of the time, so there is theft in these homes sometimes. I am definitely headed back that way to raise my family and I would suggest for others to do the same.
