Default Gem Hunting east of Asheville

I am looking for a gem hunting place I can make a one day trip from Raleigh. I read a few threads here and it looks like the best ones are in Franklin county but that is too far. I found Thermal City Gold Mine in Union Mills which is probably 3.5 hours drive. Has anyone had experience with Thermal City Gold Mine? My kids love Gold and I think they would like that.

I have seen Gem Mountain in Spruce Pine mentioned which is 4hrs. Gem Mountain looks a little more commercial, but the kids probably won't mind.

Are there any closer than those 2? My kids probably don't care but I would rather mine dirt/rock that is blasted and brought right to the sight as opposed to planted with Gems.

I have not found anything much like a real mine experience as far east as you are looking for other than Reed's Gold mine north of Charlotte. If you are willing to just dig from a seeded bucket, Jim's Gems and Gold is close to Aberdeen and they are nice people that really cater to kids.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try Hiddenite. Looking over the reviews here it looks like a mixed bag of reviews. Seems like as long as you know the place is just for show and not for fortune hunting the kids should have a good time.
