Default Antiques and Furniture in WNC

Hey Everyone,
We have finally arrived a bought a house! We are loving it, and so far have nothing but good things to say.
I need some help finding some good resources for Antiques and Furniture in the Asheville or surronding area. I don't mind a drive. I went to some of the local stores here but was looking for a bigger selection and perhaps some better values. Any tips? I love having pieces with character and charm, knew right where to go in CA but am really lost here!
Thanks!
~Duke101

There's a pretty big antique store warehouse just off of I-26 in Hendersonville. Two floors worth of goods. Take the Bat Cave (US64E) exit.

Here is another great place, Riverside Antique Mall 794 Riverside Dr Asheville. They have great stuff, I've bought a lot there. And the place is big.

Default offensivevisit

At the door a visitor is greeted with a sign stating that no purses are allowed in the store. That immediately meant that my wife was stripped of her ability to protect herself and to access her credit cards for paying since a locker in the face of such blatant distrust was not an option.

I kindly mentioned to the owner that in all my shopping, "I never had found a situation where my wife was not allowed to carry her purse."

His smart ass response was,"Well, now you have."

We never will set foot in the place again.

Default Antique Shops in Asheville

Downtown Asheville on Broadway have two shops that's been there a long time. Right near The Mellow Mushroom is Stuff Antiques. Craig and Otto bought the building years ago when downtown was being renovated. They specialize in lighting but have a most unique and eclectic shop. The main floor is their shop and on the upper floor is booths with different folks. An interesting note is that they have a loft on the 3rd floor that is amazing. The movie "Hannibal" with Anthony Hopkins, had the candle scene filmed there. I have never seen the movie myself because movies like that creep me out. Next door is Magnolia Beauregard's run by Ronnie Myers. Ronnie has mostly wonderful American antiques and is pretty much a purist in that you never see reproduction furniture in his store. He was once featured in Arts and Antique magazine. This is one of my favorite shops. There are other antique shops downtown as well. There is a guy on Lexington that specialize in art work. Going back towards Biltmore Village on River Road, past The Tobacco Barn are several antique shops as well. I can't remember all the names but there are several. You can make a day going to all the shops in Asheville and not see everything. Johnny Penland has auctions on Friday night, not sure where, and Wilson & Terry Auction is near Asheville but not in Asheville. Check their web sights for exact information. And if you are very, very, very rich, there is Brunk Auction that is on Tunnel Road. Of course, like someone else noted, there is Sweeten Creek Antiques on Sweeten Creek going out of Biltmore Village. This should keep you busy for a while. It is antique heaven for sure. Some shops do carry reproductions and it is hard to tell the difference sometimes. Most people just want the look and don't seem to mind.

Tyson's in Black Mountain...on the pricier side but tend to have good sale. We also have Town and Country in downtown Black Mountain and Penland's in Black Mountain on US 70 (great deals there if you don't mind slightly lesser quality).

Walhalla, in Oconee County, SC is a bit of a drive from Asheville area (1.5 hours) but is considered a mecca of antiques. The little town was founded by Germans a long time ago and the antiques often reveal this unique past. From 25 South Follow Scenic Highway 11 (Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway) all the way West to Walhalla. There is a city park that is home to a beautiful waterfall (Issaqueena Falls) and an abandoned civil war era tunnel (Stumphouse Tunnel) only a couple miles from the neat town to round out the trip if you decide to go...
