Shelby isn't all that bad..
Now, the downtown/historic area is really booming! All of the storefronts full and bustling and the old, old houses have been redone beautifully. There are strolling walkers and window shoppers and cafes for coffee and lunch.. huge shade trees and the courthouse lawn.. just gorgeous!!
There is a 'farmer's market' that is inside and 7 days a week.. not too much local produce, but still produce and from somewhere other than a chain store. Gotta support the smaller guy.
That area of Shelby is wonderful and the areas right outside are very nice too.. but there are a few pockets of poverty that are a bit harsh. I know that in the milltown just west of downtown you can buy a house for about $10,000. Beautiful houses too.. very 1930's with the porches etc.. just lovely. One day that area will really boom!! Being that close to the historic district etc.. wow. If I could get I on that now...but that area is poor and the folks are a bit rough.
When we were house shopping we looked at Shelby. The home prices there are sooooo much lower than anything else in the area..even in the nicer areas, the prices are very reasonable. But it was too far from where we needed to be. I still look though...
Don't give up. Come on home and take a look and see what you think.. they have a Chic-Fi-let.....A true sign of civilization.
