Canton always gets a harsh view upon it from the Buncombe county folks, all because of the paper mill that emits an infrequent foul smell that sometimes catches drivers on the interstate a little off guard. Canton is one of the closest incorporated towns in proximity to Asheville (w/o the Asheville cost of living) Bethel and West Canton are both nice middle-class communities and are within 20-30 minutes of downtown Asheville.

If Canton is out, then Waynesville is 9 miles west. It's a larger town of about 10,000, and much more picturesque than Sylva/Dillsboro, still close to Asheville (40-45 mins away) and the Blue Ridge Parkway is just 4 miles outside of town. It has good schools, a thriving arts community and a decent (although slowly rising) cost of living.
