Maggie Valley, NC
Can anyone give me any info about Maggie Valley? My husband and I are looking into buying a piece of land there for retirment. Is it a safe area? Are there amenities close by (shopping, medical, etc.)? Are the people friendly? Are the prices (taxes, utilities, etc.) reasonable? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Be careful buying land out there. Just last year there was a big slope failure that took out a house there. There is a lot of unstable mountain land being pushed on the market and the state legislature failed to pass legislation in the last session to control it. There are maps being produced of unstable slopes so be sure to check on that. Also make sure you get a good consultant to check out any land before you buy.
Second, have you been out there? The community of Maggie Valley has been trying to develop the area as "the gateway" to the NE section of the GSMNP and it looks like a small version of Pigeon Forge. My impression was that turning loose a few bulldozers would be a good start on redeveloping the area but I also feel that way about Cherokee (OK, AN go at me now for being honest). Waynesville on the other hand is a really nice community with most of the tourist development limited to the downtown main street strip.

Parts of Maggie are nice, but you do have to be SO careful about the area you buy because of landslides. And for the record, you have to be careful with which electric company you get because blue ridge electric is very expensive!

If by medical you mean a hospital, Haywood Regional is about 10 miles away and Harris Regional in Sylva around 20 miles. I don't think that there are very many physicians in Maggie; probably Waynesville for them. Regular shopping would be in Waynesville, not too far down the road. I first saw Maggie in 1975; it's changed a lot since then. For year around living, it strikes me as being too busy/touristy in the summer and too dead in the winter. I prefer Waynesville or Sylva. But that is just me, everyone is different.

I LOVE Maggie Valley, I've never lived there, but been there several times. I was there once in Jan and loved it, it was cold but not freezing cold, very comfortable. It's so beautiful. If I could afford to I would be living there now.

Yeah smaller version of pigeon forge. The only shopping you can do is at tourist traps that will sell you coffee mugs with mts on them. Its really pretty but its a trap. There are about 25 hotels and they are all 25 dollars a night. You basically need to access waynesville or asheville for anything else.

We will be vacationing in Maggie last week of October. Could anyone tell me of a good grocery store or is it just the local Wal Mart or mom and pops?
Need to have seafood available to make chowder so wondering if we should bring our own. Thanks.

I know there is a Super Walmart in Waynesville. Last time I was there in 2007 there was also a Food Lion and Ingles.

The closest stores to Maggie will be the Food Lion on Paragon Parkway and the Ingle's on Russ Avenue. Depending on your location in Maggie and traffic, neither will be more than 10-15 minutes away from you. Several convenience stores will dot the road along the way and if you are heading to Ingle's, you will pass a K-Mart and Big Lots as well. Just down the road from Ingle's is a Bi Lo, also a grocery store. The Super WalMart is the farthest from Maggie and would require you to either go through town or get on the bypass. Have a good stay.
