Not sure exactly what you mean by "good conscious people"? I happen to believe you can find good people just about everywhere myself
We used to have a regular poster, yorkshirelass, who lives in Rutherfordton and could not say enough good about it. She's been off the forum a few months but I am sending her a message for you in case she checks in okay? She used to help lots of people with info about the area and even helped a few with where to buy.
As for me, I've only spent time camping in and around the area so I can't say for sure what it is like to live there. However, I do think it is worth you looking into as it is still an affordable area and may get you the acreage and home in your budget. It's not a bad drive to Asheville either at just about an hour. Hendersonville would be even closer and would have most things you'd need that Rutherfordton might not.

Oh well, then that's a problem. You will have a hard time finding what you want I'm afraid that close to Asheville, sorry about that!
I'd suggest spending some time riding the roads within a 10 mile radius of her job and just looking for "land for sale by owner" signs.

We have spent YEARS of our lives living and being somewhere because of work....and in the end it simply used up more of our lives.
We are now taking the leap and realising chasing money to the detriment of life is not how we want to live.
We have decided if we can get by on the pay of being 'Wal Mart greeters' it would be worth it to finally live....although I have since decided the hours at Wally world are too restricting,no jobs on weekends or nights is worth the loss of our time.
If you can buy land and a home for much less in a different region then there isn't the need for as much money.
Where we have our land there are several parcels for sale and right now you could buy for much less than they are listed at in my opinion.
There ARE certain restrictions in place but nothing drastic....also I have doubts ANY of the restrictions will be enforced as few people are building. We are one of four places in there with any sort of structure in place.

oz, I fully know what you mean about not chasing money and don't feel we are chasing it at all. However we have enough for a down payment and thats it.....so we need to have enough income to get financed. Her job also lends to a good quality of life and not all jobs in her field do so. Its a tough situation.

Sorry wasn't aimed at you specifically, just how we all seem to end up in life....spending our lives working in the hopes of 'someday' getting to the point where we can live.
One thing about borrowing money is this, the lender looks at what you are making at that moment...
So....y'all are making good money now at the current jobs, you find a property you like(and think you can afford) elsewhere in the area and buy it.
Nothing stops you from then quitting your jobs the day after closing on the property.
To add, once you have YOUR slice of heaven,I believe you will get so much out of simply BEING there that you the 'outside world' won't matter. We so love simply BEING on our land that going to town is a chore.

We have a small organic farm in Far West NC. There are a lot of people here who are environmentally conscience. How far west are you willing to go?
