My boyfriend and I spent a few days in early October in Asheville last year and had a great time. He is from Cary and I am from Durham. We met several people from around the country who were really nice, and so were the locals. I never had a problem with anyone honking or being rude. The only time it was crowded and busy was when we were waiting for a table at Tupelo Honey Cafe. The trees were beautiful, and everything we did from the Biltmore to exploring downtown made for a good time. I really think people attract what they give out...

I say all this after spending a month in the Boston area. Asheville was somewhere we chose to stop and spend a few nights as we drove south to our home in Florida. I've heard so many good things about Asheville but we're just not seeing or feeling it. The mountain views on the way here were awesome, so peaceful and bucolic. The last thing we expected was snarled up traffic and rudeness when we got here. Just our humble opinion. Yeah, I know.. don't let the door hit me on the way...... Just saying.. there are a lot worse places than Florida!
I agree with you about Downtown Asheville and I'm originally from WNC. Next time you drive through try staying in Flat Rock, Tryon, Saluda, Fletcher, any of those areas south of Asheville. Smaller towns, beautiful areas, etc. Hope you have a better experience next time.

Haha....You just described my dearly beloved WIFE!

This thread and discussion has been great, just went through Asheville Friday coming home to Va. , asked wife if we were in Florida?
We drove from Greenville,SC to Brevard,NC (my first visit to both places), and into Asheville to get on I-40 heading home. Wish I would have had more time to visit Black Mountain. I also would love to visit Fontana Lake in western NC, and Sylva.

I think WNC is beautiful, but it won't solve my problems.

People where I live are rude from time to time, but then you encounter some one going out their way to help you out or be nice..But I have had days where I wasn't so nice and social too, and had the kind of outlook Verobeach had in their first posting.

Its called life. You just gotta keep going.
