Safer than those cities, yes, in my opinion.

Depends on where you are in Asheville. If you look at the online crimes map that the city police have it is localized to certain areas of town. A lot happens in or near the public housing developments and business areas that are easy targets for crime. This topic has been discussed several times here in the past so do a quick search for the other threads. For the most part if you don't go cruising for drugs in Pisgah View after midnight and don't hang out on street corners downtown at 2 am you're probably pretty safe. That said right now I live just outside Wash DC in Manassas VA and the crime rate here is negligible compared to Ashevilles stats. For example Moving.com ranks total crime in Manassas at 37 and Asheville at 111, with 100 being the national average. Virginia has low crime rates because we have very tough laws, mean cops, and no early outs--do the crime, do the time. All the other city comparison websites will give you similar results.

Here's the link to the crime mapper: mapAsheville - Crime Mapper

514 score based on a 320 U.S average:

So it's worse than the average U.S city.

Definitely a lot more crime than one would expect for a little city of this size. As Cofga has pointed out, probably a lot happens in certain areas, such as near the projects, and parts of downtown. I think the cops in Asheville are way too lax about enforcing laws.
