But one of the biggest problems is that the growth is not well planned. No plans at all, really. They are going to add hundreds of people with no additional infrastructure such as dumping stations, schools, fire depts and EMS. On 208 there will be dumptrucks, log trucks, construction crews, not to mention the extra cars the homeowners drive with no ability to widen it.. The Laurel on one side and rocky mountainside on the other. A bit luckier with the developments towards Wolf Laurel, the homeowners will just use 26 to Asheville and bypass the heart of the county.
Plus, there is still heated debate about water usage, the dry wells that will be coming from all of the new taps into the water table and exactly what to do with millions of gallons of treated sewage that will by unloaded into one small creek without the size to handle that much more flow and what will become of the yards downstream. Oh how I wish there was some planning going into the extremely fast development of Madison County. It would ensure the beauty and ease of lifestyle that we have come to know. But, we are leaving Madison in less than a week. Being driven out by all of the changes. It will be sad for us to come back and visit our friends and to see what it will be like in the next few years. And Hot Springs got past the dry county laws because they are within the city limits and had a citywide vote to allow beer and wine in restaurants. Marshall could do the same. There is a private club under renovation in Marshall that when open, could serve drinks to "members" I believe. If you wanna do something fun, you could open a coffee shop in Mars Hill since Purple Mountain closed. I miss it. A college town without a coffee shop? You would get tons of business. |

Hi Atomswould, yep, yoga/pilates in Marshall. I can't remember the name of the lady who does it, but there is a studio in the building beside the courthouse. If you ask at Zuma etc... I am sure that they can direct you to the right person. I have friends that go and love it. Enjoy.

Hi All,
Been lurking on this forum for awhile, trying to learn as much as possible about NC. Somewhere here I think I read that Madison Co has no (or very few?) gated communities... in my opinion, this is a very good thing! And also the projected growth rates are much less that for other counties (like Buncombe & Henderson, for example)... also a very good thing. My question is why? Is the terrain or climate inhospitable to development? Is much of the land protected? Is there a strong lobby of residents working to preserve the quality of life? Or is this just a temporary glitch and Madison Co will eventually fall to developers? |
