Very small town about 20 miles northwest of Asheville, but it's a world away in terms of lifestyle and pace. It's very slow, and most everybody there is native to Madison county. Just a little country mountain town on the river...
It is very rural, and 'cooperwx' is correct, about everyone is native there. It is moonshine territory. I lived in Asheville 1977-1986 and at that time it was known not to tresspass in that county.
It still seems to be a pretty closed community, less than 1000 residents. The stats say it's relatively poor and almost entirely (98.5%) white. Folks considering relocating to Madison county might feel more comfortable in Mars Hill (college town) or the Wolf Ridge area (ski/2nd home/retirement area).
We have just purchased land outside of Marshall and will be building over the nect two years before we move there permanently- the people are friendly and the town is going to grow - hopefully not too rapidly - don't tell too many people about Marshall. We think it's the perfect distance from Asheville and traffic and crowds. Stop by Zuma Coffee and have lunch at the Rock Cafe - it's a really great little town.

Wow, do I have a twin now?
Welcome to the forum, but I am surprised they let you take that name
I agree that Mars Hill is the best part of Madison county.
