...And you bother to question why the locals can often have a negative opinion of Florida folks?
...I'll bet if you wanted to experience an alternate form of "entertainment", you could just express how you feel DIRECTLY to one of the "muffin tops", and treat yourself to a good 'ol country-style, ***whuppin".

Can't help but be amused
By those who move to an area and find out that it doesn't suit them. But instead of just leaving with the feeling that "Hey, it didn't work out; it's not really our kind of place", they feel the need to disparage the local people. How dare those people who have been living there not conduct their lives in the appropriate manner? I guess some people just have the need to feel superior.
We don't actually live in the area (yet), but have been visiting for about 30 years and have friends who owned a business in Waynesville for many years and still live there. Other friends live in Sylva and teach at Western Carolina University. I never realized how uncivilized the area was. I guess they have been good at keeping the secret. I may have to spend more time in the Wal-Mart parking lot to get the true feel for the area.
I remember reading a letter to the editor in a magazine several years ago. It was written by someone who had moved to Hendersonville from New Jersey. It was one long complaint of how the people in Hendersonville were uneducated, slow, stores were bad, nothing to do, etc. I guess Hendersonville must have taken it to heart as they are now so much more civilized.
I'll bet the people of Maggie Valley/Waynesville haven't lost any sleep in the last couple of years with the feeling that there is a void in their lives

In response to those who think there might not be much to do in Haywood County, here's a partial list of things you can experience there and in the surrounding areas (and I'd venture to guess that at least a few full-time residents participate in these activities -- not just tourists):
Hiking
Mountain/rock climbing
Whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking
Horseback riding
Cycling
Camping
Golf
Fishing
Nature photography
Bird-watching
Skiing in Maggie Valley during the winter
Folkmoot in Waynesville during the summer
Now, these activities may not be as mentally stimulating as going to the Wal-Mart and belittling people for their idiosyncrasies, but it's an impressive list nonetheless.
And a tip of the hat to JBird, whose perspectives are the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The term "Floridiot" is depressingly accurate sometimes.

Great post. Myself, I'm actually quite ok with folks who find "nothing to do" in WNC. Hopefully they will not consider moving there (or leave if unhappy) that way the more space and land for those who do appreciate beauty. . . and also less unhappy, grumpy people to contend with!

The farther West in NC, the more remote!!!
When we started looking up here, we covered pretty much the whole of it....
And YES!!! City folk, actually do read local newpapers...
When we were out in Graham County, looking at property, the local Real Estate agent compared that area to """MAYBERRY RFD"""..
Graham county is 'dry'....there is very little crime....simply because there are very few people...
After one of the local manufacturing companies announced closing in Robbinsville, they gave a picture, of how 'bleak' things are out there...
The newspaper article indicated that most of the population didn't even have and 8th grade education, and it would be very difficult to entice new industry to come to the area.....
The locals were distraught....and rightfully so...
They were going to be forced into the reality of the 'cruel world'....
Globalization is not a pretty picture, for these people....they have NO concept of the reality of Economics....and why they can't pay their bills...
They are competing, against someone across the oceans, who is willing to work, for less than minimum wage....
As Wall Street analyst Richard Russell once said...""""THERE WILL BE TEARS"""

Best of the season to you Chisox, you are too kind. You used the descriptive "F" word that I typed in, then decided to erase before I posted my last one. Thank you.
The best thing about this area is that if you love it - like Chisox and JRR and me and countless others, great - it's there for you to love. If you decide that you don't - that's fine, too... I-40 runs right through Haywood County to take you from coast to coast to find somewhere that is right for you.
It is a choice to come here. It is a choice to go anywhere. If those choices don't add up to what one might hope for them to... MAKE ANOTHER CHOICE! It's that simple.
This is a beautiful area. The people are beautiful and welcoming... provided that they are treated with the same warmth and respect that anyone would want to receive. Everything goes back to the "Golden Rule".. Treat others as you would like to be treated. If you want to make fun of folks and view locals with disdain, than expect to have negativity thrown back your way.
Kindness is not a path that enough people choose these days.
PS - Chisox, did you get out to the free 'star show' at the Richland Balsam overlook on your visit?

Crazy G, I have a question and if you choose not to answer or it is too personal I totally understand. . . but I have read just a few of your postings and I am interested and curious because like I stated, I am looking to move to WNC within the next year or two.
I don't know how long you have been there, or where you came from but it seems like you are not happy living there? If you initially moved there by choice then what changed it for you? Do you regret your decision and are looking to move away?
I understand moving there there will be people who have lived there all there lives and are maybe more backward (for lack of a better word) than someone born and raised in the city. I don't mind a mix of people, and think it makes life more intersting. But I too know that there are a lot of people moving there and it will not be that difficult to find those of like minds. Just vacationing in Brevard I have met people through hiking clubs and running association that are very much like myself. . Also through work and church I assume there will be others of like mind. . .
As far as your tree trimmer story well of course there are going to be people with less education and opportunity. I mean, if they had higher education they probably would not be available to trim your trees right?
And hey, they had a skill that you were willing to pay for agreed? I mean if you could trim your own trees I assume you would not be shelling out cash for their expertise?

Reply to Spunky;
Like so many people that have moved to Waynesville, we came out of Florida....
For whatever reason, a significant percentage of all housing in Haywood County is owned by 'out of county' people....."""FLORIDA ??? """
Haywood County, as with most of WNC, "" IS BEAUTIFULL""
We had Florida friends, that had a place over on Lake Nantahala....
Just goregous....We thought we wanted to live there also, it was so very pretty....
""UNTIL"" you listened to them speak of the area....""" NOTHING....ABSOLUTELY NOTHING""" over there...they sold and moved to Lake James [?] over in Charlotte...
As 'stupid' as this sounds....we couldn't even buy ""DOG FOOD"" in Waynesville....Our dog needs Science Diet, and no store, except the vet had it!!! We had to drive to Asheville, to buy dog food....
WAYNESVILLE/MAGGIE VALLEY IS A TOURIST TOWN....THE FACT THAT A MAJOR PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION LEAVE FOR THE OFF SEASON, MUST TELL YOU SOMETHING....Most of the businesses shutter in the off-season in Maggie Valley....
And traffic on Russ Ave, in Waynesville, is manageable again
My suggestion, is you go to the Chamber of Commerce, and get their demographs study....it'll give you a breakdown, of the population, wages, housing prices etc...
Locals, cannot afford to live there...THEY DON'T MAKE ENOUGH MONEY!!!!
Median house prices is $200K +....Wages are something like $10/hr...
There is this ""BIG"" gap, between the have's/have nots....and it shows up here on this web page....
""IF"" you don't like it here...take I-40 outta here...
Well we did!!! We live in Hendersonville, NOW, after doubling our investment in a log cabin home in Maggie Valley....

Thank you very much for the reply. So you like it much better in Hendersonville I take it? There is a big difference in quality of life?
I have only passed briefly through Hendersonville but it seemed more built up then Waynesville.
I am a nurse who will be seeking employment in an area hospital. I am looking at Haywood Regional and Transylvania in Brevard. But I am also going to go up to the Boone area and check it out.
Again, thanks for your reply.

WELL!!! You are right...Hendersonville, & Henderson County are ""MORE"" built up....They ""DO" have a larger population, both in the summer and in the 'off-season'...
In certain areas, of Henderson County...""""WE DO HAVE ONE THING THAT SEPERATES THEM FROM ALL OTHER AREAS""""
>>>>>>""""WE HAVE ZONING RESTRICTIONS"""<<<<<<<<<
>>>>HORRORS....HORRORS....HORRORS<<<<
The locals don't like/want/need zoning restrictions....
THEY WANT TO PUT THEIR DOUBLE-WIDES ANYWHERE THEY PLEASE!!!!
Even next to your $200K house....and them mountain people don't want nobody telling them ""NOTHIN""" ...you hear!!!
Don't tell them, they can't have junk cars in their front yard, or riped soffas on their front porch....no sir!!! don't speak to them about that....
In Canton NC, they wanted to pass a law about having upholstered furniture on front porches along with refigerators....needless to say it failed.....
