Spunky,
Look into Mission / St. Joe's Hospital in Asheville. They are a top notch hospital system. Their Heart Center is in ranked very highly in the US. I am trying to get my sister (also an RN) to move down here from the DC area and check into Mission. I know she'll love it here.
I am still puzzled by all of the negative postings on Haywood County and other rural points beyond. Some make it out to be as remote as Siberia. Most of what anyone might want can be found in town, and if not, Asheville is a 20 minute drive to the rest of it. I have lived in plenty of places where something you might want may be 4-5 miles down the road, but traffic is so awful that it takes 30 minutes to get there. I prefer a 20 minute ride, with beautiful scenery to a 30 minute view of taillights and other frustrated folks.
And once again, as these forums clearly point out... "to each his (or her) own".

Thank you, and I agree completely. I am not worried about remote. I lived in Vermont, I love rural.

You are welcome. If there is anything else I can help you with, please feel free to PM me. I am employed in the Asheville area, commute to Haywood County, and love it here. I have lived in other less-rural places and I am not missing a thing.

My ideal would be to work at Haywood or closer to where I live. Even better walk or bike to work!

Spunky, for a closer spot check out Haywood Regional Medical Center in Clyde. They are steadily working hard on taking steps towards improving. They have had put some time and thought into handling growing pains. They have had a number of renovation projects going on - with a new ER and improvements to different wards, etc. (I am in the construction industry and see these projects on const. bulletins, etc.).
I worked 4 miles away from my house (both my home and work in Waynesville) it was GREAT! I got a better offer in Arden, and chose to go a little further, but I was already used to a little travel time. If the offer wasn't so lucrative ( and a few more little things hadn't happened to help sway me), I might have stayed on right where I was. The job, salary, and timing were right for me. Everyone is at a different place in their life concerning what they will / can accept, etc. I totally understand this.
I would LOVE to bike to work. I did that on weekends when I had extra work to do at the W'ville job. BEAUTIFUL!!!
When I was 19, I had a job at the Smithsonian, in DC, on the groundskeeping crew. I took the bus and subway to work, occasionally biked, and one time, I decided to walk home to my residence in Alexandria, VA - just because it was a beautiful day and I wanted to see how long it would take me. I think it took about 2 or hours, but that was a while ago so maybe hindsight is kind.

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to jbird22 again" -- but what a perfect characterization of South Florida. We often joke with our friends that there's no such thing as "running a 15-minute errand" here. The nearest Publix is only a few miles away from us, but going there even for just a few items can take close to an hour when you account for traffic, stoplights, the crowded parking lot and long checkout lines. It teaches you to budget your time, as well as money.

I will never understand how a person can claim to have a relationship with god strong enough to lead others on the one hand, and turn away god's children on the other. what you do unto the least of my brothers, or something like that, isn't it?
But what I find even stranger is an entire community of people, in the 21st century, allowing, supporting, or at least not openly denouncing such treatment of their neighbors and their brothers.
if this is wnc, maybe it's not for me after all. or is this attitude and behavior far removed from av?
another question... with all this new age and metaphysics supposedly going on in the area, why are there no unitarian universalist churches?

From a 2005 follow-up story by USA Today on the East Waynesville Methodist Church/John Kerry voting controversy:
"Forty other members resigned in protest of the church's actions and the Rev. Chan Chandler was eventually forced to step down under pressure from his congregation and other members of the community."
So there's another side to this story.
