Hello! I am a 22 year old single lady that is looking to relocate to Asheville. I am originally from the Nashville, Tennessee area, but will be moving from the Marianas Islands. (Between Australia and Japan)
I have a B.A. in History, but have worked in offices, assisted living facilities, restaurants and the wedding industry. (I have worked consistently since 15, which explains the array of areas at my young age).

I am really looking for some insight from the locals. Which area(s) would be safe for a young female to live on her own? What is the job market like? I have read that it is not the most receptive place for 'outsiders'. I am a Southerner through and through, but not a North Carolinian. Am I going to have an aloof reception?

I have the plan to take a couple of visits after I land in June and July to scout the jobs and housing situations. Any other tips that would prove useful? Thanks so much for your time.

Well, the advice is always the same: do not move here without a job or a very large stash of money to hold you over while you are looking for a job (6 months was the traditional recommendation but I think that is optimistic these days).

Like many other beautiful places that are tourist destinations, the economy is very shallow. Think hospitality and health care. It looks like you have some related experience, so there is hope.

I personally wouldn't recommend anyone move here. It's a nice place to visit but it gets old fast. The cost of living makes no sense here, everything is overpriced for what you get. I've been here 2 years and I'm leaving this summer. I won't miss much about this place aside from the outdoorsy aspect. Good luck finding a job that actually pays you what you're worth. If you do move here, don't buy a house for at least a year because you may regret it. I wish you the best of luck in your decision.

Either bring your own job, or bring lots of money, better yet, bring both.
