Excuse me? You were the one being "snarky" when you made this absolutely ridiculous statement:
International man- all you ever do is tell people to search the forums.
I simply pointed that out.

But the OP CLEARLY states that this thread is where people can ask the questions that have been posted a hundred times so they are all in one place so as to cut down on some of the redundancy (but probably not).
|
Yes, and if you hadn't made such a silly comment (noted above) I probably wouldn't have responded.

If you dont feel like answering for the millionth time, just dont say anything and give someone who doesnt mind answering the oppurtunity to answer.

But as it is nothing in my comment prevented anyone from answering, especially since it was directed at the person asking the questions, not suggesting anyone shouldn't answer.
Nor did it have anything to do with not feeling like answering, since I haven't answered anything a "million times" and in fact have less than 100 posts.

Also new people join daily, some who are asking and some who are answering. You never know, you might put someone off this thread when someone new with valuable information may come along after you and answer the question better than the previous posts.
|
Right, which my statement in no way prevents, especially since I said in my first response that people could answer or point someone to another thread.

This is true. I didn't search but I did read through threads from the prior two weeks that interested me. They were not specific enough for me to prepare adequately for my trip.
I found a CDL school here where I can get my practical done fairly quick and has a relatively flexible schedule. I'll be scheduling my class when I get back from my vacation Dec 6th. As soon as that's done and a little more research over these next few weeks prior to turkey day I'm heading down there. Wasted enough time in my life... that's stopping now.

I didn't have problems getting on boats. I had a problem finding a good one. I actually worked with this skipper before but he totally screwed the whole crew this last trip... actually the rest of the crew got screwed twice because they didn't walk like I did. $2,100 in 2.5 months... got that in 2.5 weeks in the cannery after I walked. The $500 check for 5,000 lbs of halibut and 3000 lbs of grey cod was the clincher. Apparently 2 of the previous 3 checks we received were draws off that one.

hey lisa
my 2 friends and I really want to go down to ND and work there. We know how hard life could get out there but we're no afraid of that... we just want a job and a place to stay. Where do you recommend we start? is there a waiting list for the man camps?

With no oilfield experience I would recommend starting off on a frac or wireline crew. They are always looking for people to work on these crews. The pay doesn't start off as high as some of the other positions, but getting that experience under your belt helps and you can easily find more opportunities once you do have that experience.
As for man camps, I'm sure there are waiting lists if they even rent out to individuals. Most contract directly through corporations.

Several questions
1-I've been unemployed for 7 years but have been looking for work for 3. I've had three jobs in customer service and one in payroll. Because of the length of time I've been out of the workforce and my lack of experience (my longest job was the payroll position (3 years) which was my high school job) I haven't had any luck here in Utah. You said that people who relocate first then start looking for work have a better chance of getting hired, so say I've relocated. Do you think I'd have a better chance in Williston? Jobs I'm looking for: office work, cashier, waitress, librarian.
2-How necessary is a car for living in Williston? If someone didn't have one, would they be able to walk to most everyday errands?
3-You said that the cost of living was high. Can you give some examples?
Thank you

I would stay in Utah. Convergys, CenturyLink, Teleperformance, etc. won't hire you??? Have you tried them? My sister just got on with Convergys in Ogden, it's over $11/hr and is easy work.
You'll always have a better chance if you came up here versus trying to get these jobs out of state.

It's not, at least not in the wintertime. If you don't have a place to stay and you come up here and have no car... it's just not safe.

Utah is cheap. Think of the most expensive place to rent in Salt Lake City... maybe $3,000 a month for an executive suite downtown. That's how much a crappy 3 bedroom will cost you here if you can even find one.
Gas is way more and cost of food is crazy. When my mom came and visited us (she lives in the Salt Lake area) she could not believe how expensive just the basics were at our store.

Sounds like I'll be right at home coming from AK, LOL. for a state that produces oil, gas sure is expensive here.
Shortly after I arrived here I went shopping and grabbed a box of generic cookies off the shelf gasping at the $2.65 price. The sticker clearly stated "$2.65 in Alaska." Removing the sticker revealed $1.75. O_o
